새남터순교성지

한강변 모래사장에 있던 조선 시대 군사 처형장 터로, 1846년 한국 최초의 사제 김대건 신부가 이곳에서 순교하였다. 새남터는 국사범을 처형하던 자리였기에 조선에 들어온 성직자들이 잇달아 이곳에서 처형되었는데, 1801년 신유박해 때 조선 최초의 외국인 사제 주문모 신부가, 1839년 기해박해 때 앵베르 주교와 모방·샤스탕 신부가, 1866년 병인박해 때 베르뇌 주교를 비롯한 선교사들이 이 모래벌에서 피를 흘려 '조선의 골고다'라 불릴 만한 곳이 되었다. 마카오에서 신학을 공부하고 스물넷에 사제가 되어 돌아온 김대건은 사목 활동 일 년여 만에 체포되었고, 1846년 9월 스물다섯의 나이로 군문효수형을 받았다. 옥중에서 그가 신자들에게 남긴 마지막 회유문은 박해를 두려워하지 말고 서로 사랑하며 주를 섬기라는 권면으로, 죽음 앞에서도 흔들리지 않는 소망이 무엇인지 보여 준다. 김대건 신부는 1984년 시성되어 한국 성직자들의 수호성인이 되었다. 1987년 순교의 자리에 세워진 기념성당은 한옥의 기와지붕과 단청을 입은 독특한 건축으로, 전통 문화 속에 뿌리내린 신앙을 상징한다. 기차와 지하철이 오가는 용산의 강변에서, 이 땅의 첫 목자들이 흘린 피를 기억하며 그 독특한 성당 건축을 눈여겨보자.
Saenamteo Martyrs' Shrine — Seoul Yongsan-gu
Saenamteo, a former military execution ground on the sandy banks of the Han River, is where Korea's first native priest, St. Andrew Kim Dae-geon, was executed in 1846 at the age of twenty-five, barely a year after his ordination in Macau-trained exile. Because state criminals were executed here, the site claimed many of the church's first shepherds — Fr. Zhou Wenmo in 1801, Bishop Imbert and Fathers Maubant and Chastan in 1839, and Bishop Berneux with fellow missionaries in 1866 — earning it the name 'the Golgotha of Korea.' Kim's last letter from prison, urging believers to fear nothing and love one another, remains a testament to hope unshaken by death; he was canonized in 1984 as patron of Korea's clergy. The memorial church built on the spot in 1987, with its traditional tiled roof and painted eaves, embodies faith rooted in Korean form.
