새문안교회

새문안교회는 1887년 9월 언더우드(Horace Underwood) 선교사가 한국인 신자들과 함께 설립한 한국 최초의 조직 장로교회로, '한국 교회의 어머니 교회'로 불린다. 특별히 기억할 것은 이 창립 예배에 이미 만주에서 복음을 받아들이고 세례받은 한국인들이 참여했다는 사실이다. 서상륜을 비롯한 이들은 로스 선교사와 함께 성경을 우리말로 옮기고, 그 말씀을 안고 고국으로 돌아와 스스로 신앙 공동체를 이루고 있었다. 곧 한국 장로교회는 서양 선교사가 일방적으로 심은 것이 아니라, 처음부터 한국인의 자발적 신앙 위에 함께 세워진 것이다. 이후 새문안교회는 수많은 교회와 지도자를 길러 내며 한국 장로교의 든든한 뿌리 역할을 감당해 왔다. 2019년 완공된 새 예배당은 두 팔을 벌려 자녀를 품는 어머니의 품을 형상화한 곡선 정면이 인상적이니, 그 상징에 담긴 어머니 교회의 사명을 눈여겨보라.
Saemoonan Presbyterian Church — Seoul Jongno-gu
Saemoonan Church, organized in September 1887 by Horace Underwood together with Korean believers, is Korea's first organized Presbyterian church and is honored as the 'mother church' of Korean Presbyterianism. What is especially worth remembering is that Koreans who had already received the gospel and been baptized in Manchuria took part in its founding. Men like Seo Sang-ryun had helped missionary John Ross translate the Bible into Korean and returned home bearing that Word, already forming faith communities of their own. So the Korean Presbyterian church was not planted one-sidedly by Western missionaries but built from the start upon Koreans' voluntary faith. Since then Saemoonan has raised up many churches and leaders as a firm root of Korean Presbyterianism. The sweeping curved facade of the 2019 sanctuary embodies a mother's arms spread wide to embrace her children — note the mission held in that symbol.
