레온의 산 이시도로 왕립 대성전은 11세기 로마네스크 양식의 보고(寶庫)다. 카스티야-레온 왕 페르난도 1세는 세비야의 대주교이자 중세 지식을 집대성한 「어원지(Etymologiae)」의 저자인 성 이시도로의 유해를 이슬람 지배하의 세비야에서 이곳으로 이장했다. 성전에 딸린 '왕들의 판테온(Panteón de los Reyes)'은 로마네스크 천장 벽화가 원형 그대로 보존되어 '로마네스크의 시스티나'라 불린다 — 농경 열두 달과 그리스도의 생애를 그린 채색 천장이 압권이다. 성 이시도로의 방대한 학문은 이교 고전의 지식마저 신앙의 빛 아래 통합하려 한 시도로, 배움과 믿음이 대립하지 않음을 보여준다. 이곳이 성배를 소장했다는 이야기는 검증되지 않은 전설(전설)이다. 개신교 순례자에게 이시도로는 '여호와를 경외하는 것이 지혜의 근본'(잠 9:10)임을, 참된 학문이 하나님을 향할 때 온전해짐을 일깨운다. 방문 팁: 판테온 관람은 유료 가이드 투어이며 벽화 보호를 위해 사진 촬영이 제한된다.
Royal Basilica of San Isidoro de León — León
The Royal Basilica of San Isidoro in León is an 11th-century Romanesque treasure. King Ferdinand I translated here the relics of St Isidore, archbishop of Seville and author of the Etymologiae, from Muslim-ruled Seville. Its Pantheon of the Kings preserves original Romanesque ceiling frescoes, earning the name 'the Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque,' with the labours of the twelve months and the life of Christ overhead. Isidore's vast learning sought to gather even pagan classical knowledge under the light of faith, showing that study and belief need not be enemies. The claim that it held the Holy Grail is an unverified legend (legend). For Protestant pilgrims Isidore recalls that 'the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom' (Prov 9:10). Tip: the Pantheon is a ticketed guided tour; photography is restricted to protect the frescoes.
