손양원 목사 생가

'사랑의 원자탄'으로 불리는 손양원 목사(1902~1950)가 태어난 경남 함안 칠원의 생가가 복원되어 있다. 그는 여수 애양원에서 세상이 꺼리던 한센병 환자들의 상처를 손수 씻기고 싸매며 목자로 섬겼고, 일제 말 신사참배를 거부하다 여러 해 옥고를 치렀다. 그의 신앙이 세상을 놀라게 한 것은 1948년 여순사건 때였다. 좌익 세력에 가담한 청년이 그의 두 아들 동인·동신을 총으로 살해했으나, 손양원은 그 청년을 용서하고 도리어 양자로 삼아 품었다. 두 아들의 장례식에서 그는 슬픔이 아니라 아홉 가지 감사의 기도를 하나님께 올려, 원수까지 사랑하라는 산상수훈을 그대로 살아냈다. 1950년 한국전쟁이 터지자 그는 피난을 권하는 이들의 손을 마다하고 애양원 환자들 곁을 지키다 인민군에게 붙잡혀 순교했다. 원수 사랑과 낮은 자 섬김, 그리고 순교로 이어진 그의 생애는 한국교회가 세계에 내놓을 수 있는 가장 아름다운 신앙 이야기 가운데 하나다. 생가 곁 기념관에서 아들들의 장례식에서 드린 아홉 가지 감사 기도문을 꼭 읽어 보라.

The restored birthplace of Rev. Son Yang-won (1902-1950), known as the 'atomic bomb of love,' stands in Chilwon, Haman. At Aeyangwon in Yeosu he washed and bound the wounds of leprosy patients the world shunned, and he was imprisoned for years for refusing shrine worship. His faith stunned the nation in 1948 when a young man who had joined leftist forces shot dead his two sons, Dong-in and Dong-sin — and Son forgave the killer, then adopted him as his own son. At his sons' funeral he offered not grief but nine thanksgivings to God, living out the Sermon on the Mount. When war came in 1950 he refused to flee, stayed with his patients, and was seized and martyred. His life of enemy-love, service, and martyrdom is among the most beautiful stories the Korean church can offer the world.
