주기철목사기념관
신사참배를 끝까지 거부하다 1944년 평양 형무소에서 순교한 주기철 목사(1897~1944)의 고향, 창원 진해 웅천에 세워진 기념관이다. 그는 오산학교와 평양 장로회신학교를 거쳐 목회의 길에 들어섰고, 마산 문창교회를 거쳐 1936년 평양 산정현교회에 부임했다. 일제가 신사참배를 강요하던 암흑기, 그는 강단에서 오직 하나님만을 예배해야 한다고 담대히 외쳤고, 다섯 차례에 걸친 검속과 모진 고문 속에서도 우상 앞에 무릎 꿇기를 단호히 거부했다. '죽음을 각오하고 한 번 죽음으로 신앙을 지키겠다'는 이른바 '일사각오(一死覺悟)'의 설교는 지금도 한국교회 순교 신앙의 상징으로 남아 있다. 결국 그는 오랜 옥고 끝에 1944년 해방을 보지 못하고 옥중에서 생을 마쳤다. 전시관은 그의 생애와 설교, 옥중 신앙의 자취를 따라가며 한 목회자가 걸어간 좁은 길을 보여 준다. 안락한 시대를 사는 순례자에게 '주님을 위한 고난'이 무엇인지를 정면으로 묻는, 한국 개신교 순례의 필수 코스다. 전시된 '일사각오' 관련 자료 앞에서 그의 마지막 기도를 조용히 묵상해 보라.
Rev. Ju Ki-cheol Memorial Hall — Gyeongnam Jinhae-gu
This memorial hall stands in Ungcheon, Jinhae, the hometown of Rev. Ju Ki-cheol (1897-1944), who refused Shinto shrine worship to the end and died a martyr in Pyongyang prison. Trained at Osan School and Pyongyang Presbyterian Seminary, he ministered at Masan's Munchang Church before being called to Pyongyang's Sanjeonghyeon Church in 1936. Through five imprisonments and brutal torture during the darkest years of Japanese rule, he preached that God alone must be worshiped and refused to bow to idols. His sermon on the resolve to 'die but once' to keep the faith endures as a symbol of Korean martyrdom, and he died in prison in 1944 without seeing liberation. The exhibits trace his life, sermons, and prison faith, confronting today's pilgrims with the question of what it costs to follow Christ.
