랑카과 대성당 (엘 사그라리오)

랑카과 대성당 엘 사그라리오는 오이긴스주의 중심 광장 플라사 데 로스 에로에스를 마주하고 서 있다. 이 본당의 기원은 1550년 산티아고 주교 디에고 데 메델린이 엘 사그라리오 교구에서 분리해 세운 랑카과 본당으로 거슬러 올라가지만, 옛 성당은 1814년 치른 격전으로 크게 훼손되었다. 지금의 건물은 1861년 건축가 후안 에르바헤의 설계로 공사가 시작되어 이탈리아 출신 건축가 에우세비오 첼리가 마무리했고, 1876년 축성된 뒤 1926년 랑카과 교구 설정과 함께 대성당으로 승격되며 이름도 '엘 사그라리오'로 바뀌었다. 성당이 마주한 광장은 1814년 10월 베르나르도 오이긴스가 이끈 독립군이 왕당파에 포위되어 참패한 '랑카과 참사'의 현장으로, 이 패배로 독립군은 아르헨티나로 퇴각해야 했고 칠레는 이후 3년간 왕정복고기를 겪었다. 훗날 독립을 이루어낸 이들의 실패와 좌절이 새겨진 자리에 예배의 처소가 자리 잡고 있다는 점은, 한 나라의 역사에서 패배조차 헛되지 않았음을 되새기게 한다. 2010년 지진으로 손상되었다가 이듬해 복원된 성당 정면의 종탑과 소박한 파사드를 광장 벤치에 앉아 천천히 눈에 담아 보자.
Rancagua Cathedral (El Sagrario) — Rancagua
The Rancagua Cathedral, known as El Sagrario, faces Plaza de los Héroes at the heart of O'Higgins Region. Its parish traces to 1550, when the Bishop of Santiago, Diego de Medellín, separated it from the El Sagrario parish, though the old church was badly damaged in the fierce battle fought here in 1814. The present building was begun in 1861 under architect Juan Herbage and completed by the Italian Eusebio Chelli, blessed in 1876, and elevated to cathedral status in 1926 when the Diocese of Rancagua was created and it took the name El Sagrario. The plaza it faces is the site of the 1814 'Disaster of Rancagua,' where Bernardo O'Higgins's independence forces were surrounded and crushed by royalist troops, a defeat that forced the rebels into Argentina and opened three years of Spanish restoration in Chile. That a house of worship now stands where a fateful defeat once unfolded quietly reminds us that even failure was not the end of the independence story. Damaged again by the 2010 earthquake and restored the next year, its bell towers and modest facade reward a slow look from a bench in the plaza.
