1947년, 사해 북서쪽 절벽의 한 동굴에서 잃어버린 염소를 찾던 베두인 목동이 돌을 던져 넣었다가 항아리 깨지는 소리를 듣고, 그 안에서 두루마리들을 발견했다. 이것이 20세기 최대의 고고학적 사건으로 불리는 사해 사본(死海寫本)의 시작이었다. 이후 1956년까지 쿰란 인근 11개 동굴에서 약 900점에 이르는 사본과 단편이 나왔는데, 여기에는 이사야서 전권을 담은 온전한 두루마리를 포함해 에스더서를 제외한 구약 모든 책의 사본이 들어 있었다. 이 사본들은 기원전 3세기부터 서기 1세기 사이에 필사된 것으로, 그때까지 알려진 가장 오래된 히브리어 사본보다 약 천 년이나 앞선 것이었다. 동굴들이 내려다보이는 언덕 위에는, 이 사본들을 필사한 것으로 여겨지는 에세네파 공동체의 유적이 발굴되어 있다. 그들이 함께 식사하던 집회소, 잉크병과 긴 필사대가 나온 필사실(스크립토리움), 그리고 몸을 정결히 씻던 여러 정결례탕(미크베)이 광야의 금욕적 신앙 공동체의 삶을 보여 준다. 놀라운 것은, 천 년의 간격에도 이 사본들의 본문이 후대의 성경 본문과 거의 완벽히 일치했다는 사실이다. 이는 '주의 말씀은 영원히 하늘에 굳게 섰다'는 고백을 눈으로 확인시켜 주는, 성경 신뢰성의 대표적 증거다. 전망대에서 가장 많은 사본이 쏟아져 나온 제4동굴이 건너다보인다.
Qumran — Megilot Yam HaMelakh Regional Council
In 1947 a Bedouin shepherd searching for a lost goat tossed a stone into a cliff cave near the northwest shore of the Dead Sea, heard a jar shatter, and found scrolls inside — the beginning of the Dead Sea Scrolls, called the greatest archaeological discovery of the twentieth century. By 1956 some 900 manuscripts and fragments had come from eleven caves around Qumran, including a complete Isaiah scroll and copies of every Old Testament book except Esther. Copied between the third century BC and the first century AD, they were roughly a thousand years older than any Hebrew manuscript then known. On the plateau overlooking the caves stand the excavated ruins of the Essene community thought to have copied them — an assembly hall where they ate together, a scriptorium that yielded inkwells and a long writing bench, and several ritual baths that reveal an ascetic desert community of faith. Astonishingly, across that thousand-year gap the text of these scrolls matched later Scripture almost perfectly — standing evidence for the reliability of the Bible. Cave 4, the richest of all, is visible from the lookout.
