카스르 알야후드(요단강 세례터)

여리고 동쪽 요단강 서안에 자리한 세례터로, 예수님이 세례 요한에게 세례 받으신 곳으로 전해지는 지점의 이스라엘 쪽 접근로다. 전승은 이 일대를 이스라엘 백성이 언약궤를 앞세워 마른 땅으로 요단을 건넌 곳(수 3장), 엘리야가 겉옷으로 물을 가르고 건너가 회오리바람으로 승천한 곳(왕하 2장)과도 연결해 왔으니, 물을 가르시고 길을 여시는 하나님의 이야기가 겹겹이 쌓인 강가다. '카스르 알야후드'라는 이름은 '유대인의 성'이라는 뜻으로 인근 수도원의 모습에서 유래했다고 전해진다. 강 주변에는 비잔틴 시대부터 이어진 수도원들이 늘어서 '수도원의 땅'이라 불렸으나, 1967년 이후 군사 지역으로 닫혀 있다가 2011년 일반에 재개방되었고 근래 주변 지뢰 제거 작업이 완료되어 옛 수도원들도 차례로 열리고 있다. 강가에는 세례식을 위한 계단과 난간이 마련되어, 흰 가운을 입은 순례자들의 세례와 세례 갱신 예식이 날마다 이어진다. 성령이 비둘기같이 임하고 아버지의 음성이 울린 사건의 현장에서 드리는 세례 갱신을 많은 순례자가 여정 전체에서 가장 깊은 순간으로 꼽는다. 강폭이 좁아 건너편 요르단 쪽 알마그타스 유적이 마주 보이며, 두 나라의 순례자들이 같은 강물 앞에서 함께 찬송하는 풍경도 낯설지 않다.
Qasr al-Yahud Baptism Site — Area C
Qasr al-Yahud, on the west bank of the Jordan near Jericho, is the Israeli-side access to the traditional site of Jesus' baptism — a stretch of river tradition also links to Israel's crossing behind the ark (Joshua 3) and Elijah's parting of the waters before his ascension (2 Kings 2). Byzantine-era monasteries lined this 'Land of Monasteries' until the area was closed as a military zone after 1967; it reopened to the public in 2011, and recent demining has restored access to the old monasteries. White-robed pilgrims descend its steps daily for baptisms and baptismal renewals, and many count that moment, within sight of Al-Maghtas across the narrow river, as the most moving of their journey. Pilgrims on both banks often find themselves singing before the same waters.
