Puente la Reina Pilgrims' Bridge & Church of the Crucifix — Navarre
Here two branches of the Camino, from Roncesvalles and from Aragon, merge into one. The elegant six-arch Romanesque bridge that symbolizes the town is said to have been built by a queen so pilgrims could cross the Arga, giving the town its name, the Queen's Bridge. This tradition of royal bridges, hospitals and hostels shows how charity for the stranger takes the form of stone and road. At the town's entrance the Church of the Crucifix holds an unusual Y-shaped Gothic crucifix, said to have been brought by German pilgrims, a powerful depiction of the suffering body of Christ. For a Protestant visitor the bridge recalls the union in Christ of people who set out from different places and now walk one road together. Like a bridge that carries others over water, believers become crossings for one another. Tip: the arches reflected in the river at dawn or dusk make a beautiful photo, and check the church's opening hours.
