예수님이 38년 된 병자에게 '일어나 네 자리를 들고 걸어가라' 하신 요한복음 5장의 무대로, '히브리 말로 베데스다라 하는 못이 있는데 거기 행각 다섯이 있고'라는 복음서의 묘사 그대로 다섯 주랑이 둘렀던 이중 저수조 유적이 성 안나 교회 경내에서 발굴되었다. 19세기 말부터 이어진 발굴로 거대한 두 저수조와 주랑 기초, 후대의 치유 신전과 비잔틴·십자군 교회 유구가 층층이 드러났다. 한때 요한복음의 묘사를 후대의 창작으로 여기던 회의론이 있었으나, 이 발굴은 복음서 기자가 예루살렘의 지형을 정확히 알고 있었음을 보여 주어 복음서 기록의 역사성을 증언하는 대표적 고고학 현장으로 꼽힌다. 예수님은 물이 움직이기를 기다리던 무력한 병자에게 다가가 '네가 낫고자 하느냐' 물으시고 말씀 한마디로 일으키셨으니, 은혜는 자격이 아니라 긍휼에서 나온다는 사실이 이 못가에 새겨져 있다. 곁에 선 성 안나 교회는 1140년경 세워진 십자군 시대 로마네스크 건축이 온전히 남은 드문 예로, 살라딘이 1192년 신학교로 전용한 덕분에 파괴를 면했고 그 명문이 지금도 정문 위에 남아 있다. 울림이 7초 이상 이어지는 경이로운 음향으로 유명하여 순례팀들이 이곳에서 찬송을 부르는 것이 관례처럼 되어 있으니, 꼭 한 곡을 함께 불러 보라.
Pools of Bethesda — Jerusalem
Excavations beside St. Anne's Church uncovered a great double pool with the five porticoes described in John 5 — Bethesda, where Jesus asked a man ill for thirty-eight years, 'Do you want to get well?', and healed him with a word. Layer upon layer, the digs revealed the twin reservoirs, later healing shrines, and Byzantine and Crusader churches, overturning older skepticism about John's account and showing the evangelist knew Jerusalem's topography precisely. The scene remains a picture of grace that stoops to the helpless rather than rewarding the strong. The adjacent St. Anne's, built around 1140, survives as one of the best-preserved Crusader churches because Saladin converted it to a school in 1192 — his inscription still crowns the door. Its acoustics carry a note for seven seconds or more; singing a hymn inside is an unmissable pilgrim tradition.
