Plaza Mayor de Valladolid (1559 martyrdoms) — Castile and Leon (Valladolid)
Often called Spain's first planned square, the Plaza Mayor of Valladolid is also where the fate of the Spanish Reformation was effectively sealed in 1559. In May and October of that year, under the watching eyes of the new king Philip II, two great autos-da-fe were held here, and Valladolid's budding evangelical community fell to burnings and executions. Among those who died was the court preacher Agustin de Cazalla, and together with the crackdown in Seville that same year, these events all but extinguished the Reformation within Spain. Today the square is a lively city center ringed by red buildings, yet its stones quietly hold the memory of a homegrown awakening broken by the power of the state. Without sentimental embellishment, it soberly reminds us that faith carried a real cost. The National Sculpture Museum and the cathedral lie within easy walking distance.
