순례자 사무소(콤포스텔라 증서)

대성당에서 멀지 않은 순례자 사무소는 카미노의 마지막 행정 관문 같은 곳이다. 순례자가 완주를 증명받는 제도 자체는 중세로 거슬러 오르지만, 지금의 사무소 건물과 운영 방식은 현대적이다. 이곳에서는 순례자가 길 곳곳의 성당·숙소·카페에서 받아 온 크레덴시알(순례자 여권)의 도장을 확인하여, 마지막 100km 이상을 도보로(자전거는 200km) 신앙적·종교적 동기로 걸은 이에게 라틴어로 이름을 적은 완주 증서 '콤포스텔라(Compostela)'를 발급한다. 성수기에는 문밖까지 긴 줄이 늘어서고, 오랜 여정 끝에 자기 이름이 라틴어로 적힌 증서를 두 손에 받아 드는 순간은 누구에게나 뭉클하다. 그러나 정직하게 말하면 이 종이 한 장이 순례의 참열매는 아니다. 진짜 증서는 손에 쥔 문서가 아니라, 길 위에서 낮아지고 넓어진 마음, 곧 겸손과 감사로 새로워진 내면에 새겨진다. 사람은 도장의 수를 세지만 하나님은 중심을 보시며, 참된 이름은 종이가 아니라 하늘에 기록된다. 방문 팁: 대기 시간이 길 수 있으니 온라인 대기 등록 여부를 미리 확인하고, 소정의 기부로 라틴어 완주 거리 증서(Certificado)나 증서 보관용 원통도 함께 준비할 수 있다.
Pilgrim's Reception Office — Galicia (A Coruña)
Not far from the cathedral, the Pilgrim's Reception Office feels like the Camino's final administrative gate. The institution of certifying completion reaches back to the Middle Ages, though the present office and its workings are modern. Here staff check the stamps in a pilgrim's credential — gathered at churches, hostels, and cafés along the way — and issue the 'Compostela,' a completion certificate with the walker's name in Latin, to those who covered at least the last 100km on foot (200km by bike) for a spiritual or religious motive. In high season the line runs out the door, and receiving a certificate bearing one's own Latin name after so long a journey moves everyone. Yet honestly, this single sheet is not the true fruit of the pilgrimage. The real certificate is written not on the document in hand but on a heart made humbler and wider along the road, renewed in humility and gratitude. People count the stamps, but God sees the heart, and the true name is written not on paper but in heaven. Tip: waits can be long, so check for online queue registration, and for a small donation you may also get a Latin distance certificate or a protective tube.
