비야알레그레 니뇨헤수스 성당

리나레스에서 북쪽으로 20킬로미터 떨어진 비야알레그레의 이 단일 신랑 신고전주의 성당은 1885년 공사를 시작해 1889년 12월 4일 봉헌되었고, 가로 90미터 세로 30미터에 이르는 규모로 1979년 국가사적으로 지정되었다. 이곳이 특별한 이유는 건축 자체보다 그 안에 잠든 사람 때문인데, 칠레의 자연학자이자 예수회 사제였던 아바테 후안 이그나시오 몰리나의 유해가 1969년부터 성당 지하 납골묘에 안치되어 있고, 화가 페드로 올모스가 그린 벽화가 그 공간을 감싸고 있다. 2010년 대지진으로 지붕과 종탑, 벽체 곳곳이 심각하게 손상되어 2011년부터 장기간 복원 공사에 들어갔으며, 천장 벽화 복구와 구조 보강, 기와 지붕 교체와 측랑 복원까지 마친 뒤 2018년에야 온전한 모습으로 다시 문을 열었다. 8년에 가까운 복원 기간을 거친 만큼 내부는 오히려 새 단장한 듯 정갈하고, 최근 다시 칠해진 벽화 색채도 한층 선명해졌다. 몰리나의 납골묘와 벽화를 보고 싶다면 성당 사무실에 미리 연락해 관람 가능 시간을 확인하고 방문하는 것이 좋다.
Parish Church of the Christ Child, Villa Alegre — Villa Alegre
This single-nave neoclassical church in Villa Alegre, 20 kilometers north of Linares, was begun in 1885 and inaugurated on December 4, 1889, and its 30-by-90-meter structure was declared a National Historic Monument in 1979. What makes it special is less the architecture than who rests within it: the remains of Chilean naturalist and Jesuit priest Abate Juan Ignacio Molina have lain in a crypt here since 1969, surrounded by a mural by painter Pedro Olmos. Severely damaged by the 2010 earthquake, the church underwent restoration from 2011 that repaired ceiling paintings, reinforced its structure, and replaced the roof, reopening fully only in 2018. After nearly eight years of work, the interior feels freshly finished. Call ahead to confirm viewing hours for the crypt and mural.
