니리빌로 성당

산티아고에서 남쪽으로 이어지던 옛 왕도(카미노 레알)를 따라 자리한 니리빌로 마을에는 18세기 말, 흙벽돌과 토종 활엽수만으로 지어진 소박한 성당이 하나 서 있다. 화려한 장식 대신 두꺼운 어도비 벽과 나무 서까래가 그대로 드러나는 이 시골 성당은 1984년 8월 14일 국가기념물로 지정되며 지역의 자랑이 되었지만, 정작 2002년에는 빗물이 스며들어 제단과 성구실 지붕이 무너지는 사고를 겪었다. 여기에 2010년 대지진까지 겹치며 벽체와 지붕 곳곳이 갈라지고 회랑 일부가 완전히 붕괴되는 등 더 큰 피해를 입었고, 산하비에르 시청과 리나레스 교구가 힘을 모아 복구 공사를 벌인 끝에 2014년 2월에야 다시 문을 열 수 있었다. 화려한 대성당들과 달리 오랜 방치와 갑작스러운 재해를 함께 견뎌낸 작은 시골 성당이라는 점에서 이곳만의 울림이 있고, 지금도 인근 농가 주민들이 주일마다 모여 예배를 드린다. 대중교통이 드물어 렌터카나 투어를 이용하는 편이 낫고, 미사가 없는 평일에는 관리인에게 미리 연락해 개방 여부를 확인하는 것이 좋다.
Parish Church of Nirivilo — Nirivilo, San Javier
In the village of Nirivilo, along the old colonial Camino Real, stands a modest late-18th-century church built entirely of adobe and native hardwoods. Declared a National Monument on August 14, 1984, this rural church nonetheless suffered a collapse of its altar and sacristy roof from water damage in 2002, then further serious damage in the 2010 earthquake that cracked walls and brought down part of a corridor. Restoration by the San Javier municipality and the Diocese of Linares reopened it only in February 2014. Unlike grand cathedrals, this small church carries the particular weight of having endured both slow neglect and sudden disaster. Public transit is scarce, so rent a car or join a tour, and call ahead on weekdays without Mass.
