푸에르토나탈레스 마리아 아욱실리아도라 델 카르멘 성당

칠레 최남단 마가야네스 지방, 마지막 희망의 해협을 바라보는 푸에르토나탈레스 시내에 자리한 이 성당은 살레시오회의 파타고니아 선교사가 남긴 흔적이다. 돈 보스코의 살레시오회 선교사들은 1917년 이곳에 도착해 학교와 경당을 세웠는데, 이는 당시 마가야네스와 티에라델푸에고 전역에서 활발히 전개되던 살레시오 선교망의 한 축이었다. 본당은 1918년 2월 23일 정식으로 창설되었고, 건축은 후안 베르나베 신부가 설계를 맡았다. 이 지역이 얼마나 최근에야 개척된 변경지였는지를 보여주는 흥미로운 일화가 있는데, 1918년 12월 29일 성당 건물 전체를 소가 끄는 굴림대에 실어 지금의 자리로 옮긴 것이다. 성당 내부에는 이탈리아 화가 마리오 보간이 그린 원조자 성모 마리아 성화가 걸려 있고, 장미창을 갖춘 30미터 높이의 종탑이 도시 어디서나 눈에 띈다. 성당 앞 광장에 서면 나탈레스 항 너머로 만년설을 인 봉우리들이 한눈에 들어와, 순례자에게도 인상 깊은 쉼터가 된다. 파타고니아 특유의 거센 바람 속에서도 백 년 넘게 자리를 지켜온 성당으로, 나탈레스 항구 산책길에 잠시 들르기 좋다.
Parish Church of María Auxiliadora del Carmen, Puerto Natales — Puerto Natales
Facing the Última Esperanza Sound in Chile's southernmost Magallanes region, this church in downtown Puerto Natales is a trace left by Salesian missionaries in Patagonia. Missionaries of the Salesians of Don Bosco arrived here in 1917 and built a school and chapel, part of the same Salesian missionary network then active across Magallanes and Tierra del Fuego. The parish was formally founded on February 23, 1918, designed by Fr. Juan Bernabé. One vivid episode reveals just how recently this frontier had been settled: on December 29, 1918, the entire building was moved on rollers pulled by oxen to its present site. Inside hangs a painting of Mary Help of Christians by Italian artist Mario Bogan, and a 30-meter bell tower with a rose window is visible from across town. Standing in the square outside, snow-capped peaks rise beyond the sound, making it a striking stop for pilgrims too. Having stood for over a century against Patagonia's fierce winds, it's a good stop along a stroll through the port of Natales.
