오웬기념각

오웬기념각은 전남 지역을 순회하며 선교하던 중 1909년 과로와 폐렴으로 순직한 미국 남장로교 선교사 클레멘트 오웬(Clement C. Owen)을 기려 1914년 세워진 벽돌 건물로, 광주광역시 유형문화재로 지정되어 있다. 의사이자 목사였던 오웬은 광주와 전남의 오지를 말을 타고 다니며 몸을 돌보고 복음을 전하다가, 정작 자신은 제때 치료받지 못한 채 쓰러졌다. 그의 죽음은 복음을 위해 스스로를 남김없이 소진한 선교사의 전형을 보여 준다. 기념각은 오웬과 그의 할아버지를 함께 기린다는 뜻을 담아 세워졌으며, 강단을 중심으로 좌석이 부채꼴로 펼쳐지고 모서리를 깎은 다각형 평면을 지닌 독특한 구조가 특징이다. 건립 이후 이곳은 집회와 강연, 음악회가 열리는 광주 근대문화의 요람 역할을 하여, 복음이 예배뿐 아니라 문화와 배움의 문까지 열었음을 증언한다. 한 알의 밀알처럼 땅에 떨어져 죽은 선교사의 생애 위에, 이렇게 많은 이들이 모여 배우고 노래하는 공간이 세워진 것이다. 부채꼴로 퍼진 내부 공간과 다각형 평면의 아름다움을 직접 확인해 보자.
Owen Memorial Hall — Jeonnam Nam-gu
Owen Memorial Hall, a designated cultural heritage site of Gwangju, was built in 1914 in memory of Clement C. Owen, the Southern Presbyterian doctor-missionary who died in 1909 of pneumonia and exhaustion contracted during itinerant ministry across Jeonnam. Both physician and pastor, Owen rode into the remotest villages to heal bodies and preach the gospel, until he himself collapsed without timely care — his death a very portrait of a missionary spent utterly for the good news. The hall, raised to honor both Owen and his grandfather, is architecturally distinctive: its seating fans out toward the pulpit within a polygonal plan with cut corners. After its founding it hosted assemblies, lectures, and concerts, becoming a cradle of modern culture in Gwangju — evidence that the gospel opened doors of culture and learning as well as worship.
