언약궤의 성모 교회

언약궤의 성모 교회는 아부 고쉬 마을을 굽어보는 언덕 위, 옛 기럇여아림으로 전해지는 자리에 1924년 세워졌다. 성경에 따르면 블레셋에서 돌아온 언약궤가 이곳 아비나답의 집에 옮겨져 약 20년간 머물렀고, 훗날 다윗이 이 궤를 예루살렘으로 옮겼다(삼상 7:1-2; 삼하 6장). 5세기 비잔틴 교회 터 위에 지어진 현재 건물의 지붕에는 아기 예수를 안은 성모의 거대한 상이 서 있는데, '새 언약의 궤인 마리아'라는 상징을 담고 있으며 텔아비브-예루살렘 고속도로에서도 뚜렷이 보인다. 이곳은 아부 고쉬에 얽힌 엠마오·십자군 전승과는 전혀 다른, 구약 언약궤 전승에 뿌리를 둔 성소라는 점이 특징이다. 개신교 순례자는 지붕 위 조각상의 신학적 해석에 얽매이기보다, 하나님의 임재를 상징한 언약궤가 오랜 세월 조용한 시골집에 머문 사건과, 그 임재가 마침내 그리스도 안에서 사람이 되어 우리 가운데 거하신 복음(요 1:14)을 연결해 묵상하면 좋다. 언덕 위 전망이 시원하니 잠시 머물러 기도하기 좋다.
Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant Church — Abu Ghosh
Our Lady of the Ark of the Covenant was built in 1924 on a hill above Abu Ghosh, on the site remembered as ancient Kiriath-jearim. Scripture tells how the ark, returned from the Philistines, was brought to the house of Abinadab here and rested about twenty years before David carried it to Jerusalem (1 Sam 7:1-2; 2 Sam 6). Over a 5th-century Byzantine site, the present church bears on its roof a huge statue of the Virgin holding the child, symbolizing 'Mary, ark of the new covenant,' visible from the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway. Unlike the Emmaus and Crusader traditions of Abu Ghosh, this shrine is rooted in the Old Testament ark. Rather than debate the rooftop image, link the ark's long rest in a quiet village to the Word made flesh dwelling among us (John 1:14).
