대구제일교회 옛 예배당

약령시 골목에 남아 있는 대구제일교회의 옛 예배당으로, 1933년 건립된 붉은 벽돌 건물이 대구광역시 유형문화재로 지정되어 있다. 1893년 무렵 초가에서 시작된 대구 최초의 개신교 신앙 공동체가 40년 만에 교인들의 헌금을 모아 세운 예배당으로, 높은 종탑과 고딕풍의 뾰족한 창을 갖추어 당시 대구 도심을 대표하는 근대 건축물이 되었다. 뒤에 종탑이 더 높이 증축되면서 예배당의 종소리는 한약 냄새 가득한 시장 골목 위로 멀리 울려 퍼졌다. 전통 시장 한가운데 우뚝 선 예배당은 복음이 조선 사람들의 일상 한복판으로 걸어 들어간 모습을 상징적으로 보여 준다. 이 예배당에서 대구·경북의 수많은 교회 지도자들이 배출되었고, 일제강점기와 전쟁의 격동기에도 예배는 끊이지 않았다. 교회 본당이 청라언덕의 새 예배당으로 옮겨 간 뒤에도 옛 예배당은 헐리지 않고 남아 초기 대구 선교의 기억을 간직한 채 자리를 지키고 있다. 약령시의 한약방들 사이를 걷다가 문득 고개를 들어 붉은 종탑을 올려다보는 순간, 백 년 전 이 골목에 울렸을 찬송 소리가 들리는 듯하다. 계산성당, 청라언덕과 함께 대구 근대골목 순례의 필수 코스로 둘러보자.
Old Daegu Jeil Church Sanctuary — Daegu Jung-gu
This former sanctuary of Daegu Jeil Church, a red-brick building completed in 1933 with a tall bell tower and Gothic-style windows, stands in the herbal medicine market alley and is a designated Daegu cultural heritage site. Built with the offerings of a congregation that had begun in a thatched house around 1893, it was one of the landmark modern buildings of the city, its bell ringing out over the fragrant market lanes. A church rising in the middle of a traditional market symbolizes how the gospel walked straight into the heart of everyday Korean life. Though the congregation later moved to a new sanctuary on Cheongna Hill, the old church still keeps its place and its memories; look up from the medicine alley to the bell tower and take in the contrast.
