오방최흥종기념관

오방최흥종기념관은 광주 최초의 한국인 목사이자 '한센인과 빈민의 아버지'로 불린 오방 최흥종(1880~1966)의 생애를 기리는 곳이다. 젊은 날 거리를 주름잡던 주먹이었던 그는, 선교사들이 모두가 피하던 한센병 환자를 손수 어루만지며 돌보는 모습을 보고 깊은 충격을 받아 회심했다고 전해진다. 아무도 만지려 하지 않던 병자에게 손을 내미는 그 사랑이, 완악하던 한 사람의 마음을 무너뜨린 것이다. 이후 목사가 된 그는 나환자 구호와 빈민 사역에 헌신했고, 1919년 광주 3·1운동에도 앞장서 옥고를 치렀다. 만년에는 스스로 모든 공직과 명예를 내려놓고 무등산 자락으로 들어가 병들고 소외된 이들과 함께 살았다. 특히 그는 세상의 명예와 욕심에 대해 자신이 죽었음을 알리는 '사망통지서'를 지어 지인들에게 돌린 것으로 유명한데, 이는 자기를 부인하고 십자가를 지라는 주님의 말씀을 온몸으로 살아낸 결단이었다. 한 사람의 회심이 도시 전체의 소외된 이들을 품는 사역으로 확장된 그의 생애는, 복음의 변화시키는 능력을 증언하는 광주 기독교 정신의 표상이다. 전시된 그의 '사망통지서'를 꼭 찾아 읽어 보자.
Obang Choi Heung-jong Memorial Hall — Jeonnam Nam-gu
This memorial hall honors Choi Heung-jong (1880-1966), Gwangju's first ordained Korean pastor, remembered as the father of the city's leprosy patients and poor. Once a street tough, he was converted after watching missionaries tenderly touch and care for the leprosy sufferers everyone else shunned — that love broke open a hardened heart. Ordained a pastor, he gave himself to the care of lepers and the poor and stood at the front of Gwangju's 1919 independence movement, suffering imprisonment for it. In his later years he laid down every public office and honor to live below Mudeungsan among the sick and the outcast. He is famous for composing a 'death notice' announcing that he had died to worldly honor and greed — a whole-life enactment of Christ's call to deny oneself and take up the cross. His life, in which one man's conversion expanded to embrace a whole city's forgotten, is an emblem of Gwangju's Christian spirit. Be sure to find and read his famous death notice on display.
