네압볼리(카발라)

드로아에서 '마게도냐로 건너와서 우리를 도우라'는 환상을 본 바울이 배를 타고 유럽 땅에 처음 발을 디딘 항구 도시 네압볼리, 오늘의 카발라다(행 16:9-11). 2차 전도여행 중이던 바울은 사모드라게를 거쳐 이곳에 상륙했는데, 사도행전의 서술이 바로 이 대목부터 '우리'로 바뀌어 누가가 일행에 합류했음을 보여 준다. 바울은 실라, 디모데, 누가와 함께 로마의 간선도로 비아 에그나티아를 따라 내륙의 빌립보로 향했고, 그렇게 유럽 복음화의 역사가 시작되었다. 그 첫 열매가 빌립보의 자색 옷감 장수 루디아였으니, 유럽의 첫 교회가 한 여인의 열린 마음에서 시작된 셈이다. 항구 근처 성 니콜라오스 교회 곁에는 바울의 상륙을 기념하는 모자이크 기념물이 세워져 순례자를 맞는다. 아시아에서 유럽으로 복음이 건너간 이 관문은, '땅끝까지 이르러 내 증인이 되리라'(행 1:8) 하신 말씀이 어떻게 대륙을 넘어 성취되어 갔는지 보여 주는 상징적 지점이다. 비잔틴 성채가 내려다보는 구시가와 오스만 시대의 수도교(카마레스)가 어우러진 항구 풍경도 아름다워, 15km 남짓 떨어진 빌립보 유적과 묶어 반나절 순례 코스로 돌아보기 좋다.
Neapolis (Kavala) — Kavala
Kavala is ancient Neapolis, the harbor where Paul, answering the vision of the Macedonian man at Troas, first set foot on European soil (Acts 16:9-11) — and precisely here Acts shifts into 'we', marking where Luke joined the party. With Silas, Timothy, and Luke, Paul walked the Via Egnatia inland to Philippi, where Lydia the dealer in purple cloth became Europe's first convert; thus the evangelization of a continent began. A mosaic monument beside the church of St. Nicholas near the port commemorates the landing, a symbolic gateway in the fulfillment of 'you will be my witnesses... to the ends of the earth' (Acts 1:8). With its Byzantine fortress and Ottoman aqueduct, the old harbor town pairs naturally with a half-day pilgrimage to Philippi, a short drive inland.
