인천 내리교회

1885년 아펜젤러 선교사의 제물포 상륙 직후 세워진 한국 최초의 감리교회 중 하나로, '한국 감리교의 어머니 교회'로 불린다. 부활절 아침 제물포에 첫발을 디딘 아펜젤러 부부의 발자취 위에서 태어난 교회는, 개항장 인천의 언덕에서 뱃사람과 상인, 노동자들에게 복음을 전하며 자라났다. 1892년부터 이 교회를 맡은 존스(조원시) 목사의 목회 아래 크게 성장했고, 존스 부부는 영화학당을 세워 인천 근대 교육의 문을 열었다. 1902년에는 이 교회 교인들을 중심으로 한 첫 하와이 이민단이 갤릭호를 타고 제물포를 떠나, 한인 디아스포라와 이민 교회 역사의 출발점이 되었다. 존스 목사는 떠나는 교인들을 축복하며 전도인을 함께 보냈고, 이민자들은 이듬해 하와이에 한인 교회를 세워 낯선 사탕수수 농장에서도 예배를 이어 갔다. 항구 도시에 세워진 교회가 복음을 품고 바다 건너까지 나아간 역사는 땅끝까지 증인이 되리라는 말씀의 성취를 보여준다. 백삼십 년이 넘는 시간 동안 교회는 인천의 격동기를 함께 지나며 수많은 교회와 일꾼을 길러 냈다. 교회 역사관에서 하와이 이민선 갤릭호와 초기 교인들의 이야기를 찾아보고, 가까운 한국기독교100주년기념탑까지 걸어 상륙의 현장을 이어 보라.
Naeri Methodist Church — Incheon Jemulpo-gu
Founded soon after Appenzeller's Easter landing at Jemulpo in 1885, Naeri Church is among Korea's first Methodist congregations and is called the mother church of Korean Methodism. Under pastor George Heber Jones from 1892 it flourished, opening the Yeonghwa school that pioneered modern education in Incheon. In 1902 its members formed the core of the first Korean emigration to Hawaii aboard the ship Gaelic; Jones blessed their departure and sent an evangelist with them, and within a year they had planted a Korean church among the sugar plantations — the beginning of the Korean diaspora church. The church's history hall tells the story of the Gaelic and those pioneering believers; walk on to the nearby Centennial Monument to stand where the missionaries first came ashore.
