나바위성당

나바위성당은 1845년 중국 상하이에서 사제 서품을 받은 김대건 신부가 페레올 주교, 다블뤼 신부와 함께 작은 배 라파엘호를 타고 조선에 첫발을 디딘 나바위 언덕에 세워진 성당이다. 김대건은 죽음을 각오한 험난한 항해 끝에 이곳에 상륙했으니, 이 언덕은 첫 한국인 사제가 복음을 품고 고국으로 돌아온 귀환의 자리다. 목숨을 잃을 것을 뻔히 알면서도 조국의 영혼들을 위해 돌아온 그 발걸음은, 좋은 소식을 전하는 자들의 발이 얼마나 아름다운가 하는 말씀을 조용히 떠올리게 한다. 상륙 후 60여 년이 지난 1906년에 세워진 성당은, 기와를 얹은 한옥 지붕에 고딕풍 종탑을 더한 절충 양식의 걸작으로 국가 사적으로 지정되어 있다. 서양의 신앙이 이 땅의 건축과 만나 하나의 아름다움을 이룬 이 성당은, 복음이 이 땅에 뿌리내리는 과정을 눈으로 보여 준다. 성당 뒤편 화산 언덕에 오르면 김대건 신부 순교기념비와 함께 유유히 흐르는 금강 쪽 전망이 펼쳐지니, 첫 사제가 목숨을 걸고 건너온 그 물길을 바라보며 잠시 머물러 보라.
Nabawi Catholic Church — Jeonbuk Iksan-si
Nabawi Church stands on the hill where Kim Dae-geon, ordained a priest in Shanghai, China, in 1845, first set foot on Korean soil, arriving with Bishop Ferreol and Father Daveluy aboard the small boat Raphael. Kim landed here after a perilous voyage undertaken in the face of death, so this hill is the place of return where the first Korean priest came home bearing the gospel. His steps, taken for the souls of his homeland though he plainly knew they might cost his life, quietly recall the word of how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. The church, built in 1906 more than sixty years after that landing, is a masterpiece of blended style — a tiled hanok roof crowned with a Gothic bell tower — and a designated national historic site. Where Western faith met the architecture of this land to form a single beauty, the church shows to the eye the gospel taking root in this soil. Climb the hill behind to the martyrdom memorial of Fr. Kim, where the view opens onto the Geum River flowing calmly by; gaze at the waters the first priest crossed at the risk of his life, and linger a while.
