명례성지
명례성지는 1866년 병인박해 때 순교한 신석복 마르코(1828~1866)의 생가터이자, 1897년 경남 지역 최초의 본당이 세워진 유서 깊은 곳이다. 낙동강을 오르내리며 소금과 누룩을 팔던 상인 신석복은 장삿길에서 체포되었고, 배교하면 살려 주겠다는 회유 앞에서도 '천주를 배반할 수 없다'며 신앙을 지키다 대구에서 순교했다. 그는 사제도 지식인도 아닌, 강가에서 생업에 매인 평범한 상인이었기에 그 순교가 더욱 마음에 사무친다. 신석복의 후손 가운데는 훗날 성직자가 여럿 나와 그 신앙이 대를 이어 흘렀다. 낙동강이 내려다보이는 언덕에는 복원된 옛 성당과 2019년 봉헌된 현대적인 기념성당이 나란히 서 있어, 백 년이 넘는 신앙의 역사가 한눈에 들어온다. 소금 장수의 순교는 '너희는 세상의 소금'이라는 주님의 말씀을 자연스레 떠올리게 하여, 개신교 순례자에게도 일상의 자리에서 신앙을 증언하는 삶을 묵상하게 한다. 강바람이 부는 언덕에 서서 낙동강 물길을 바라보며 순교자의 길을 되새겨 보라.
Myeongnye Holy Site — Gyeongnam Miryang-si
This hillside above the Nakdong River is the birthplace of Sin Seok-bok Mark (1828-1866), a salt-and-yeast peddler martyred in the 1866 persecution, and the site of South Gyeongsang's first Catholic parish, founded in 1897. Arrested on his trading route, he refused offers of freedom in exchange for apostasy and was put to death in Daegu — a plain merchant, neither priest nor scholar, which makes his witness all the more moving. Several of his descendants later became priests, his faith flowing down the generations. A restored old church and a striking modern memorial chapel, consecrated in 2019, now stand together above the river. The martyrdom of a salt merchant inevitably recalls the words 'you are the salt of the earth,' inviting pilgrims to ponder what it means to bear witness in the workaday world.
