시내산(모세산)

모세가 십계명을 받은 시내산으로 전해지는 해발 2,285m의 봉우리(제벨 무사, '모세의 산')로, 산기슭에는 성 카타리나 수도원이 자리한다. 출애굽기 19-20장이 증언하는 대로 이스라엘 백성이 애굽에서 나온 지 삼 개월 만에 이 광야에 이르렀고, 하나님은 불과 연기와 나팔 소리 가운데 강림하시어 언약을 맺고 십계명을 주셨다. 전승은 엘리야가 이세벨을 피해 와서 세미한 음성을 들은 호렙산도 이곳과 동일시하여(왕상 19장), 산 중턱 분지에는 엘리야를 기념하는 채플과 편백나무가 서 있다. 순례자들은 보통 한밤중에 완만한 낙타길로 오르거나 수도사들이 바위를 쪼아 만든 3,750개의 '회개의 계단'을 밟아 정상에 이르러 일출을 맞는데, 붉게 물들어 가는 광야 산줄기들의 파노라마가 장관이다. 정상에는 삼위일체 기념 채플과 모스크가 나란히 서 있어 이 산이 여러 신앙에 두루 기념되어 왔음을 보여 준다. 개신교 순례자에게 이 산행의 핵심은 율법을 주신 언약의 하나님과 그 율법을 폐하러 오신 것이 아니라 완전하게 하러 오신 그리스도를 함께 묵상하는 데 있다(마 5:17). 시내 광야에서 시작된 언약의 여정이 골고다와 빈 무덤에서 완성되었음을 되새기며 오르는 길은 그 자체로 한 편의 설교가 된다. 밤 산행이므로 방한복과 손전등, 넉넉한 물을 꼭 준비해야 한다.
Mount Sinai (Jebel Musa) — Saint Catherine
Jebel Musa, the 'Mountain of Moses', rises 2,285 meters above Saint Catherine's Monastery and is the traditional Mount Sinai where God descended in fire and cloud to give the Ten Commandments (Exodus 19-20). Tradition also identifies it with Horeb, where Elijah heard the still small voice, remembered by a chapel in the basin partway up. Pilgrims climb by night — by camel path or the 3,750 monk-hewn Steps of Repentance — to watch the sunrise set the desert ranges ablaze, arriving at the summit chapel as light floods the wilderness. For the Protestant pilgrim the ascent is a meditation on the God of covenant who gave the law here and on Christ who came not to abolish but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Bring warm clothing, a flashlight, and plenty of water for the night climb.
