느보산

느보산은 모세가 죽기 전 여리고 맞은편에서 약속의 땅을 바라본 산으로 전해지는 곳이다(신 34장). 해발 800여 미터의 정상 전망대에서는 요단 계곡과 사해, 여리고의 종려나무 숲이 한눈에 들어오고 맑은 날에는 예루살렘과 베들레헴의 산지까지 보여, 모세가 바라본 가나안의 파노라마를 그대로 체험할 수 있다. 4세기 말 이곳을 찾은 순례자 에게리아의 기록에 이미 모세 기념교회가 언급되며, 1933년부터 이어진 프란치스코회의 발굴로 비잔틴 시대 교회와 수도원의 전모가 드러났다. 복원된 기념교회 안에는 6세기 사냥과 목축 장면을 담은 모자이크를 비롯한 아름다운 바닥 모자이크들이 보존되어 있다. 교회 곁에는 광야에서 든 놋뱀과 십자가를 결합한 이탈리아 조각가 판토니의 조형물이 서서, '모세가 광야에서 뱀을 든 것 같이 인자도 들려야 하리니'(요 3:14)라는 말씀을 형상화한다. 신명기는 모세가 여기서 온 땅을 보았으나 건너가지 못하고 죽어 벧브올 맞은편 골짜기에 묻혔으며 오늘까지 그 묻힌 곳을 아는 자가 없다고 기록한다. 약속을 눈으로 보고도 들어가지 못한 모세의 생애는, 믿음으로 바라보며 죽은 히브리서 11장의 순례자들과 우리 자신의 인생을 겹쳐 보게 한다. 전망대의 방향 표지판 앞에서 사해 너머 예루살렘 방향을 확인하며 신명기 34장을 읽어보자.
Mount Nebo — Faisaliah Sub-District
Mount Nebo is the height from which Moses viewed the Promised Land before his death (Deut 34); from the 800-meter summit the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and the palms of Jericho spread out below, with the hills of Jerusalem and Bethlehem visible on clear days. The pilgrim Egeria already described a memorial church of Moses here in the late fourth century, and Franciscan excavations since 1933 have uncovered the Byzantine church and monastery, whose restored sanctuary preserves splendid sixth-century mosaics. Beside it stands Giovanni Fantoni's serpentine cross, fusing the bronze serpent of the wilderness with Calvary — 'just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up' (John 3:14). Deuteronomy records that Moses saw the whole land yet never crossed over, and that no one knows his burial place to this day; reading chapter 34 at the viewpoint, one stands with all the pilgrims of Hebrews 11 who greeted the promise from afar.
