아르벨 산 (아르벨 절벽)

아르벨 산은 갈릴리 호수 북서편에 우뚝 솟은 절벽으로, 정상에 서면 가버나움과 타브가, 팔복산, 그리고 멀리 골란 고원까지 갈릴리 사역의 무대 전체가 한눈에 들어온다. 예수가 가르치고 병을 고치며 제자들을 부르신 호숫가 마을들을 이만큼 넓게 조망할 수 있는 곳은 달리 없어, 순례자들에게는 갈릴리 사역을 한 폭의 지도처럼 마음에 담기 좋은 전망대로 사랑받는다. 성경이 이 산에서 일어난 특정 사건을 직접 지목하지는 않지만, 일부 순례 전통은 부활하신 예수가 제자들을 만나기로 하신 '갈릴리의 산'(마 28:16)의 후보로 아르벨을 꼽기도 한다. 이는 어디까지나 추정일 뿐 성경이 산 이름을 밝히지 않았음을 분명히 해 둘 필요가 있다. 절벽 곳곳에는 로마 시대에 항쟁하던 이들이 숨어 지낸 동굴 요새와 제2성전기 마을·회당 터가 남아 있어 역사적 깊이를 더한다. 방문할 때는 정상 전망대에서 호수 전경을 바라보며, 이 좁은 지역에서 시작된 복음이 어떻게 온 세상으로 퍼져 나갔는지를 잠잠히 묵상하기를 권한다.
Mount Arbel — Galilee
Mount Arbel is a sheer cliff rising over the northwestern Sea of Galilee. From its summit the whole stage of the Galilean ministry unfolds — Capernaum, Tabgha, the Mount of Beatitudes, and the distant Golan. Nowhere else offers so wide a view of the lakeside towns where Jesus taught, healed, and called disciples, making it a beloved overlook for holding the ministry in the mind like a map. Scripture names no specific event on this hill, though some pilgrim traditions propose Arbel as the 'mountain in Galilee' (Matt 28:16) where the risen Jesus met the disciples — a guess, since the Bible does not name the mountain. Roman-era cliff caves used by rebels and Second Temple village and synagogue ruins add historical depth. From the summit, gaze over the lake and meditate quietly on how the gospel, begun in this small region, went out to all the world.
