모슬포교회
모슬포교회는 1909년 이기풍 목사의 선교로 세워진 제주 서남부 최초의 개신교회다. 이기풍 목사는 1907년 평양신학교를 제1회로 졸업한 한국 최초의 목사 7인 중 한 사람으로, 1908년 독노회의 파송을 받아 제주에 건너와 성안교회를 세웠고, 이듬해 복음은 섬의 중심 제주성에서 서남쪽 끝 포구 마을 모슬포까지 이르렀다. 유교와 무속의 전통이 깊고 외지인에 대한 경계가 심했던 섬 마을에서 교회는 냉대와 가난을 견디며 천천히 뿌리를 내렸다. 해방 공간의 제주 4.3사건과 한국전쟁이라는 현대사의 격랑 속에서도 교회는 문을 닫지 않고 신앙 공동체를 지켜냈다. 특히 한국전쟁 중에는 모슬포에 육군 제1훈련소가 설치되어 수많은 훈련병과 피난민이 이 지역으로 몰려들었는데, 교회는 이들을 품고 위로하며 복음을 전하는 통로가 되었다고 전해진다. 전쟁의 불안과 죽음의 공포 앞에 선 젊은이들에게 이 작은 포구 교회가 건넨 소망은 제주 교회사의 귀한 한 페이지로 남아 있다. 한 세기 넘게 한 자리를 지킨 시골 교회의 존재 자체가 '반석 위에 지은 집'(마 7:25)의 비유를 떠올리게 한다. 교회 곳곳에 남은 옛 흔적과 기념물들을 통해 제주 개신교 110여 년의 발자취를 천천히 더듬어 볼 수 있다.
Moseulpo Church — Jeju Seogwipo-si
Founded in 1909 through the mission of Rev. Lee Ki-poong, one of Korea's first seven ordained Presbyterian ministers, Moseulpo Church was the first Protestant church in southwestern Jeju, planted just a year after Lee established Seongan Church in the island's capital. The congregation took root slowly amid the coldness of a village steeped in Confucian and shamanistic tradition. It endured the island's darkest chapters—the Jeju 4.3 uprising and the Korean War—without abandoning its post, and when the army's First Training Center was set up in Moseulpo during the war, the church reportedly became a channel of comfort and gospel witness to countless recruits and refugees. More than a century of faithful presence on one site makes this harbor-town congregation a living picture of the house built on the rock (Matt 7:25), and traces of its long history can still be found around the church grounds.
