산 이시도로 델 캄포 수도원 인근에 세워진 현대 기념비로, 최초의 스페인어 완역 성경 번역자 카시오도로 데 레이나(1520년경~1594)를 기립니다. 세비야 부근에서 태어난 그는 종교재판을 피해 제네바, 런던, 안트베르펜, 프랑크푸르트를 전전하는 망명자의 고단한 삶을 살면서도, 성경 번역이라는 필생의 과업을 끝내 놓지 않았습니다. 십수 년에 걸친 끈질긴 노고 끝에 1569년 바젤에서 완역 성경을 세상에 내놓았고, 그 열매는 사백 년이 넘도록 스페인어권의 신앙을 먹여 왔습니다. 오랫동안 이단자로 몰려 조국의 기억에서 지워졌던 그를, 스페인 사회가 2020년에 이르러 마침내 공적으로 기리기로 한 것이 바로 이 기념비입니다. 박해가 지우려 한 이름을 시간이 끝내 되살린 자리이며, 한 사람의 조용한 헌신이 어떻게 수백 년의 세월을 흘러 오늘 우리 손에 들린 성경으로까지 이어지는지를 묵묵히 일러 줍니다. 수도원 방문과 자연스럽게 이어 둘러볼 수 있으니, 두 곳을 함께 걸으며 그의 생애를 되새겨 보길 권합니다.
Monument to Casiodoro de Reina — Andalusia (Santiponce)
Near the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo stands this modern monument honoring Casiodoro de Reina (c.1520-1594), translator of the first complete Spanish Bible. Born near Seville, he lived the hard life of an exile through Geneva, London, Antwerp and Frankfurt, fleeing the Inquisition, yet never abandoned his life's work of translation. After more than a decade of persistent labor he published his complete Bible in Basel in 1569, and its fruit has nourished Spanish-speaking faith for over four centuries. Long branded a heretic and erased from his homeland's memory, he was at last publicly honored by Spanish society with this monument in 2020. It marks where time finally restored a name persecution tried to blot out, and quietly shows how one man's devotion still reaches the Bibles we hold today. It is easily visited together with the monastery.
