몬테 도 고소(환희의 언덕)

산티아고 데 콤포스텔라를 약 4.5km 앞둔 낮은 언덕 몬테 도 고소는 중세 이래 순례자들의 오랜 조망지였다. 수백, 때로는 수천 킬로미터를 걸어온 순례자들이 이 언덕마루에 올라 처음으로 저 멀리 대성당의 첨탑을 눈에 담던 곳으로, '환희의 언덕(Mount of Joy)'이라는 이름 자체가 바로 그 벅찬 순간에서 비롯됐다. 일행 중 먼저 첨탑을 본 사람이 기쁨에 소리치며 앞서 달려 내려가곤 했다는 이야기가 오래 전해진다. 오늘날 언덕에는 1989년 교황 요한 바오로 2세의 세계 청년 대회 방문을 기념하는 거대한 현대식 기념비와 수백 명을 수용하는 대형 순례자 숙소가 들어서 있고, 산티아고 시가지가 커지며 시야를 가리는 건물이 늘어 첨탑이 예전만큼 또렷이 보이지는 않는다. 그럼에도 오랜 고난의 걸음 끝에 목적지가 처음으로 시야에 들어오는 이 자리의 감격은 여전하다. 아직 도착하지 않았어도 목적지가 보이는 것만으로 소망은 힘이 된다 — 개신교 순례자에게 이 언덕은 아직 보지 못한 그 나라를 바라보며 인내로 기다리는 신앙의 성취를 묵상하기에 더없이 좋은 자리다. 방문 팁: 기념비 근처보다 언덕의 트인 쪽에서 대성당 방향을 찾아보고, 이곳부터는 시내 진입로이니 마지막 걸음의 여운을 천천히 누리라.
Monte do Gozo (Mount of Joy) — Galicia (A Coruña)
About 4.5km before Santiago de Compostela, the low hill of Monte do Gozo has been a pilgrim viewpoint since the Middle Ages. Here pilgrims who had walked hundreds, sometimes thousands, of kilometers first caught sight of the cathedral's distant spires, and the name 'Mount of Joy' comes from that overwhelming moment; the one in a group who saw the towers first is long said to have cried out for joy and run on ahead. Today the hill holds a large modern monument marking Pope John Paul II's 1989 World Youth Day visit and a big hostel housing hundreds, and as Santiago has grown, new buildings obscure the view so the spires are less clear than before. Even so, the emotion of first glimpsing the destination after the long, hard walk endures. Not yet arrived, yet the mere sight makes hope strong — for a Protestant this hill is a fitting place to meditate on faith's fulfillment, looking toward a kingdom not yet seen and waiting with patience. Tip: look toward the cathedral from the hill's open side rather than by the monument, and, as the city begins here, savor the final steps slowly.
