The monastery of Santa María la Real in Nájera sits beneath red sandstone cliffs as a royal foundation. Tradition holds that a king of Navarre found an image of the Virgin in a cave in this cliff and built the monastery on the spot; honesty asks us to receive the finding as a pious tradition. Nájera was once the capital of Navarre, and the monastery became a royal pantheon where many kings and queens rest. Benedictine monks of the Cluniac reform made it a center of pilgrimage and prayer. The Late Gothic Cloister of the Knights is delicate as stone lace, and the finely carved wooden choir stalls rank among Spain's masterpieces of woodwork. With cliff cave, monastery and royal tombs together, it layers nature, faith and history.
