산 마르티뇨 피나리오 수도원

대성당 바로 옆, 임마쿨라다 광장을 사이에 두고 마주 선 산 마르티뇨 피나리오 수도원은 한때 스페인에서 엘 에스코리알 다음가는 규모를 자랑한 베네딕토회 수도원이었다. 기원은 10세기로 거슬러 오르지만, 지금의 압도적인 건물은 16~18세기에 새로 지어졌다. 육중한 화강암 정면과 그 규모가 대성당에 결코 뒤지지 않아, 처음 온 순례자들은 이 건물을 대성당으로 착각하곤 한다. 내부의 백미는 추리게라 양식의 황금빛 대제단과 정교하게 조각된 성가대석으로, 스페인 바로크 조각의 화려함이 극에 달한 걸작으로 평가받는다. 오늘날 방대한 수도원 건물의 일부는 종교 미술 박물관과 순례자 숙소·신학교로 쓰여, 대성당의 인파에서 한 걸음 비켜선 고요한 감상의 자리를 내어 준다. 눈부신 황금 제단 앞에서도 개신교 순례자의 마음은 조형물 그 너머의 한 분을 향한다 — 아름다움은 창조주를 가리키는 손가락일 뿐 예배의 대상이 아니며, 모든 영광은 오직 하나님께 돌아가야 함을 되새기는 자리다. 방문 팁: 대성당 관람과 묶어 반나절 일정으로 잡으면 좋고, 박물관 입장권으로 성가대석과 옛 약국·서고 등 수도원 내부까지 두루 둘러볼 수 있다.
Monastery of San Martiño Pinario — Galicia (A Coruña)
Right beside the cathedral, facing it across the Praza da Inmaculada, stands San Martiño Pinario, once the second-largest Benedictine monastery in Spain after El Escorial. Its origins reach to the 10th century, but the overwhelming present building was raised anew in the 16th-18th centuries. With its heavy granite front and a scale that rivals the cathedral, first-time pilgrims often mistake it for the cathedral itself. The interior's glory is the golden Churrigueresque high altar and finely carved choir stalls, praised as a masterpiece where Spanish Baroque ornament reaches its height. Today part of the vast complex serves as a religious art museum, pilgrim lodging, and seminary, offering a quiet place of contemplation a step away from the cathedral crowds. Even before the dazzling golden altar, a Protestant pilgrim's heart turns to the One beyond the carving — beauty is a finger pointing to the Creator, not the object of worship, and all glory belongs to God alone.
