성 요한 신학자 수도원

성 요한 신학자 수도원은 1088년 수도사 크리스토둘로스가 비잔틴 황제 알렉시오스 1세의 칙허를 받아, 사도 요한이 계시를 받은 밧모섬의 호라 언덕 꼭대기에 세운 요새형 수도원이다. 해적의 침입이 잦던 지중해의 섬이었기에 두꺼운 성벽과 탑으로 요새처럼 지어졌으나, 그 견고한 담 안에서 천 년 가까이 기도와 예배가 끊이지 않고 이어져 왔다. 성벽 안에는 비잔틴 시대의 성화와 프레스코가 남아 있고, 무엇보다 고대 성경 사본과 초기 인쇄본을 소장한 유서 깊은 도서관이 있어, 밧모섬의 계시록 동굴과 함께 유네스코 세계유산으로 지정되었다. 사도 요한이 박해받아 유배되었던 바로 그 섬이, 훗날 천 년 동안 기도가 이어지는 예배의 섬으로 바뀌었다는 사실은 개신교 순례자에게도 깊은 울림을 준다. 이는 하나님의 말씀이 유배와 고난의 땅에서도 도리어 뿌리를 내려 교회를 세워 간다는 증거이며, 박해가 마지막 말이 아님을 조용히 선포한다. 하얀 마을 위로 솟은 검은 성채 같은 수도원은 지금도 순례자와 방문객을 맞으며 그 자리를 지키고 있다. 수도원 옥상 테라스에 올라 에게해와 하얀 섬마을이 한눈에 펼쳐지는 전망을 바라보며, 유배의 섬이 기도의 섬이 된 역사를 묵상해 보자.

The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian was founded in 1088 by the monk Christodoulos, under a charter from Emperor Alexios I, atop the hill of Chora on Patmos, the island where the Apostle John received his visions. Because the Mediterranean island was often raided by pirates, it was built like a fortress with thick walls and towers, yet within those solid ramparts nearly a millennium of prayer and worship has continued unbroken. Inside are Byzantine icons and frescoes and, above all, a venerable library of ancient biblical manuscripts and early printed books, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status alongside the Cave of the Apocalypse. That the very island where John was exiled in persecution became an island of prayer for a thousand years speaks deeply to any pilgrim — evidence that God's Word takes root even in lands of exile and suffering, quietly declaring that persecution is not the final word. The rooftop terraces offer a magnificent panorama of the white town and the Aegean.
