The Metropolitan Tabernacle is the London Baptist church where Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892), the 'Prince of Preachers,' ministered; the roughly 6,000-seat building opened in 1861 for the crowds he drew after becoming a London pastor at nineteen. Converted at fifteen when a snowstorm drove him into a village chapel where he heard 'Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth' (Isa 45:22), Spurgeon preached here for thirty-eight years, and his weekly printed sermons—collected in sixty-three volumes—remain among the most widely read in history. He paired the pulpit with a Pastors' College (1856) and the Stockwell Orphanage (1867), and late in life led the Downgrade Controversy in defense of biblical authority. Twice destroyed by fire and wartime bombing, the rebuilt Tabernacle is still a living, preaching church; attending Sunday worship is the best way to experience it.
