마리아의 샘은 에인 카렘 계곡의 두 교회 사이에 있는 소박한 샘터다. '에인 카렘'이라는 지명 자체가 '포도밭의 샘'을 뜻할 만큼, 이 샘은 마을의 역사적 수원이었다. 전승에 따르면 마리아가 엘리사벳의 집으로 오르기 전 이곳에서 물을 마시거나 길었다고 하여 '성모 샘'(아인 시티 마리암)이라 불린다. 다만 성경은 마리아가 특정 샘에서 물을 길었다고 기록하지 않으므로, 이는 지역 전승임을 분명히 알아 두어야 한다. 샘 위에는 19세기 말에 세워진 모스크가 있어, 이 땅을 거쳐 간 여러 신앙 공동체의 흔적을 함께 보여 준다. 오늘날 물은 식수로 쓸 수 없으니 마시지 않도록 주의한다. 고대에는 이 샘이 마을 사람들의 빨래터이자 식수원으로 일상의 중심이었을 것이다. 화려한 성소는 아니지만, 방문 교회와 세례 요한 탄생 교회를 잇는 길목에서 잠시 멈춰, 마리아가 산골 마을까지 서둘러 올라간 걸음(눅 1:39)을 떠올리기 좋은 지점이다. 순례의 속도를 늦추고 계곡의 공기를 느끼며 두 여인의 만남을 조용히 묵상해 보라.
Mary's Spring (Ain Sitti Maryam) — Ein Karem
Mary's Spring is a modest fountain in the valley of Ein Karem, set between the two great churches. The name Ein Karem means 'spring of the vineyard,' and this was the village's historic water source. Tradition holds that Mary drank or drew water here before climbing to Elizabeth's house, hence 'Mary's Spring' (Ain Sitti Maryam). Scripture, however, records no such spring, so this is clearly local tradition. A late-19th-century mosque sits above it, a reminder of the many communities who passed this way. The water is not potable today. Though unadorned, it is a fitting place to pause on the path between the two churches and recall Mary hurrying to the hill country (Luke 1:39).
