마메르티노 감옥

마메르티노 감옥은 로마 광장(포로 로마노) 곁 카피톨리노 언덕 기슭에 있는 고대 로마의 지하 감옥으로, 사도 베드로와 바울이 순교 전 갇혔던 곳으로 전해진다. 지하의 둥근 감방 '툴리아눔'은 본래 천장에 뚫린 구멍으로만 드나들 수 있던 공간으로, 로마는 정복한 왕들과 국사범들을 처형 전에 이 어둡고 습한 곳에 가두었다. 전승에 따르면 베드로는 이 어둠 속에서도 간수 프로체소와 마르티니아노에게 복음을 전해 세례를 주었고, 감방에 샘이 솟았다는 이야기도 함께 전해 내려온다. 바울이 마지막 옥중에서 쓴 디모데후서의 '나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰으니'(딤후 4:7)라는 고백을 이곳 어둠 속에서 떠올리면 그 무게가 새롭게 다가온다. 그는 같은 편지에서 겨울이 오기 전에 겉옷과 가죽 종이에 쓴 책들을 가져다 달라고 부탁했는데, 순교를 앞둔 사도의 마지막 나날이 얼마나 춥고 외로웠는지 짐작하게 한다. 감옥 위에는 '목수 성 요셉 성당'이 세워져 있고, 지하 감방으로 내려가는 순례 동선과 전시가 마련되어 있다. 지하의 어둠 속에 잠시 서서, 사도는 매였으나 '하나님의 말씀은 매이지 아니하니라'(딤후 2:9)는 증언과 사도들의 마지막 기도를 묵상해 보자.
Mamertine Prison — Rome
The Mamertine Prison, at the foot of the Capitoline beside the Roman Forum, is the ancient dungeon where, by long tradition, both Peter and Paul were held before their martyrdoms. Its lower chamber, the Tullianum, was originally accessible only through a hole in the ceiling, and Rome confined captive kings and enemies of the state here before execution; tradition adds that Peter baptized his jailers Processus and Martinianus, and tells of a spring rising in the cell. In this darkness Paul's final words gain new weight: 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith' (2 Tim 4:7) — written in the same letter that asks for his cloak and parchments before winter. The church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami now stands above; descend into the lower chamber and stand a moment where the apostles prayed their last prayers, remembering that though the apostle was chained, 'God's word is not chained' (2 Tim 2:9).
