마재성지

마재성지는 한국 천주교 초기 지도자 정약종과 그 형제들이 나고 자란 고향 마을 마재(마현)에 조성된 성지다. 정약종은 형 정약전, 아우 정약용과 함께 서학을 접했으나, 형제들이 배교하거나 신앙에서 물러선 뒤에도 홀로 신앙을 끝까지 지킨 인물이다. 그는 한문을 모르는 백성과 부녀자들도 진리를 알 수 있도록 한글로 된 최초의 본격 교리서 '주교요지'를 지어 신앙을 전했고, 조선 천주교회 초기 평신도 지도조직인 명도회의 회장을 맡아 교회를 이끌었다. 1801년 신유박해 때 신앙을 버리라는 회유와 문초를 끝내 거절하고 서소문 밖에서 참수되어 순교했으며, 2014년 프란치스코 교황 방한 때 복자품에 올랐다. 어려운 한문이 아니라 백성의 말로 진리를 풀어 쓴 그의 작업은, 누구나 자기 말로 성경을 읽게 하자던 종교개혁의 정신을 떠올리게 하기에 개신교 순례자에게도 각별하다. 실학자 다산 정약용의 생가 여유당과 묘가 있는 마재마을과 이어져 있어 함께 둘러보기 좋다. 한강이 내려다보이는 마을 길을 걸으며 한 가문에 임한 신앙과 학문의 유산, 그리고 그 값비싼 대가를 함께 되짚어 보자.
Majae Holy Site — Gyeonggi Namyangju-si
Majae Shrine stands in the home village of Jeong Yak-jong and his brothers, including the renowned Silhak scholar Jeong Yak-yong (Dasan). Though his brothers turned away from the faith, Jeong Yak-jong held to it alone, writing Korea's first substantial catechism in the vernacular Korean script so that even the unlettered and women could grasp the truth, and leading the early lay association Myeongdohoe. Refusing every plea to recant, he was beheaded outside Seoul's Seosomun Gate in the 1801 persecution and was beatified during Pope Francis's 2014 visit. His work of putting truth in the people's own language echoes the spirit of the Reformation, making the site meaningful to Protestant pilgrims as well. Adjoining Dasan's birthplace by the Han River, it makes for a rich walk through one family's legacy of faith and learning — and its costly price.
