막달라 (미그달)

갈릴리 호수 서안에 자리한 막달라는 예수를 따르던 막달라 마리아의 고향으로 알려진 곳이다(눅 8:2). 예수는 갈릴리 여러 회당에서 가르치셨는데(막 1:39), 2009년 이곳에서 발굴된 '미그달 회당'은 갈릴리에 남은 가장 오래된 제2성전기 회당 가운데 하나로, 예수가 실제로 그 안에서 말씀을 전했을 가능성이 거론되는 몇 안 되는 유적이다. 회당 중앙에서는 성전 메노라가 새겨진 '막달라 스톤'이 출토되어, 당시 유대 신앙의 중심이 예루살렘 성전에 있었음을 잘 보여 준다. 2021년에는 두 번째 회당이 발견되어, 한 마을에서 동시대 회당 두 개가 함께 확인된 유일한 사례가 되었다. 다만 마리아의 생가나 특정 사건을 이곳으로 못 박는 전승은 사실로 단정하기 어렵고, 확실한 것은 이곳이 1세기 유대 마을이었다는 고고학적 사실이다. 가톨릭이 운영하는 막달라 센터와 예배당 '두크인알툼'은 2014년 문을 열었으며, 그 이름은 예수가 베드로에게 '깊은 데로 가라'(눅 5:4) 하신 말씀에서 왔다. 방문할 때는 회당 유적과 스톤 복제품을 천천히 살피며, 이름 없이 주님을 섬긴 여성 제자들을 떠올려 보기를 권한다.
Magdala (Migdal) — Galilee
On the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, Magdala is remembered as the hometown of Mary Magdalene, who followed Jesus (Luke 8:2). Jesus taught in synagogues throughout Galilee (Mark 1:39), and the 'Migdal Synagogue' excavated here in 2009 is among the oldest Second Temple-period synagogues in Galilee — one of the few sites where Jesus may plausibly have taught. Its carved 'Magdala Stone,' bearing a temple menorah, points worshippers' hearts toward the Jerusalem temple. A second synagogue found in 2021 makes this the only village with two confirmed contemporaneous synagogues. Claims tying Mary's house or specific events to an exact spot remain tradition, not proven fact; what is certain is the archaeology of a first-century Jewish town. The Catholic Magdala Center and its chapel Duc in Altum opened in 2014, named for 'put out into the deep' (Luke 5:4). Walk the synagogue ruins slowly and remember the unnamed women who served the Lord.
