순천 매산등 선교마을

Maesan Mission Village, Suncheon — Jeonnam Suncheon-si
Maesan Mission Village in Suncheon was established in 1913 when the Southern Presbyterian mission opened its Suncheon station, and it preserves intact on its hillside the George Watts Memorial Hall, Maesan School, and several missionary residences. Its most striking feature is that school, hospital, and church were laid out together on one hill by deliberate design — a model of mission in which the gospel does not remain in worship and preaching alone but embraces education and medicine, serving a whole city. This holistic care for people's souls, bodies, and minds is embodied on a single hill. Yet this beautiful village is also steeped in tears: missionaries like Preston and Coit buried their young children in this soil, lost to unfamiliar disease, and yet stayed at their posts to the end, their devotion sunk into the earth of this hill.
