발디비아 아라우코 거리, 아르마스 광장에서 몇 걸음 떨어진 자리에 이 루터교회가 서 있다. 1890년 4월 14일 정부 포고령으로 법인격을 인정받은 '발디비아 독일계 복음주의 협회'가 그 모체로, 남부 이민 도시들 가운데서도 일찍이 조직적 기반을 갖춘 공동체였다. 이곳 담임을 지낸 테오도르 링케 목사는 1907년 칠레 루터교 최초의 총회가 소집되었을 때 초대 회장으로 선출되어, 발디비아 공동체를 남부 독일계 개신교 조직화의 중심축으로 세웠다. 지금의 본당 건물은 반세기 넘는 세월을 지나왔고, 종탑은 그보다도 오래되어 거의 90년 가까이 도시의 하늘을 지켜왔다. 파이프오르간과 청동으로 주조된 세 개의 종을 품은 이 성전은 독특한 건축 양식으로 지역에서도 손꼽힌다. 오늘날은 발디비아 루터문화협회가 함께 사용하며 음악회와 합창 공연을 열고, 루터교 유치원과 호가르 루테라노 복지재단과도 연결되어 이민자 신앙이 교육과 돌봄으로 이어지는 모습을 보여준다. 방문객이라면 광장 산책 후 잠시 들러 오르간 선율이 남아 있는 고요한 예배당 공간을 느껴보고, 세월의 흔적이 밴 종탑을 올려다보길 권한다.
Lutheran Temple of Valdivia — Valdivia
Standing on Arauco Street in Valdivia, just steps from the Plaza de Armas, this Lutheran temple traces its roots to the 'Sociedad Evangelica Alemana de Valdivia,' granted legal status by government decree on April 14, 1890 - one of the earliest organized German Protestant communities in southern Chile. Its pastor, Theodor Lincke, was elected the first president when Chile's first Lutheran Synod convened in 1907, making Valdivia the institutional anchor of German Protestant organization in the south. The current main building is over fifty years old, while its bell tower, nearly ninety years old, has watched over the city's skyline for generations. Housing a pipe organ and three bronze bells, the temple is locally noted for its distinctive architecture. Today it is shared with the Corporacion Cultural Luterana de Valdivia, which hosts concerts and choral events, and remains linked to a Lutheran kindergarten and the Hogar Luterano welfare foundation. Visitors strolling the plaza are encouraged to step inside and take in the quiet sanctuary where organ music still lingers.
