콘셉시온 마르틴 루터 교회

콘셉시온 콜로콜로 거리에 자리한 이 교회는, 독일인 학교를 중심으로 모이던 신앙 활동과 오롬펠료 거리의 작은 예배당에서 출발했다. 1900년 무렵 산티아고에서 이주해 온 브란덴부르크 출신 루돌프 슐츠 목사의 목회 아래, 1904년 1월 18일 57명의 회원으로 '콘셉시온 독일계 복음주의 공동체'가 공식 창립되었다. 이 교회의 역사에는 유난히 눈길을 끄는 대목이 있다. 제1차 세계대전이 한창이던 시기, 칠레 영해에서 자침한 독일 순양함 드레스덴호의 승조원 250명 이상을 포함해 키리키나 섬에 억류되어 있던 독일 선원들을 위해, 이 공동체는 매달 예배를 드리러 섬을 찾았다. 전쟁으로 고향과 배를 모두 잃은 이들에게 낯선 섬에서 드려진 그 예배가 어떤 위로였을지 짐작해볼 수 있다. 2023년 총회 결정 이후 칠레 루터교회(ILCH)와 함께하게 된 이 공동체는, 오늘날 독일어와 스페인어를 함께 쓰는 마르틴 루터 회중과 성가대의 본거지로 이어지고 있다. 방문객이라면 억류된 선원들을 위해 바다를 건넜던 이 교회의 목회를 떠올리며, 전쟁과 이산 속에서도 이어진 신앙의 손길을 마음에 새겨보면 좋겠다.
Lutheran Church in Concepcion (Martin Luther Community) — Concepción
Located on Colo Colo Street in Concepcion, this church began with worship life centered on the German School and a small chapel on Orompello Street. Under the ministry of Pastor Rudolf Schulz, a native of Brandenburg who had relocated from Santiago around 1900, the 'Comunidad Evangelico-Alemana de Concepcion' was formally founded on January 18, 1904 with 57 members. One striking chapter stands out in its history: during the First World War, this congregation traveled monthly to Quiriquina Island to hold worship services for German sailors interned there, including more than 250 crew members of the cruiser SMS Dresden, scuttled in Chilean waters in 1915. One can only imagine what comfort those services offered to sailors who had lost both homeland and ship to war. Since a 2023 synod decision, the congregation has been affiliated with the Iglesia Luterana en Chile (ILCH), and today serves as headquarters for the bilingual Martin Lutero congregation and choir.
