사자 문 (성 스테반 문)

구시가 동벽에 있는 문으로, 비아 돌로로사(십자가의 길) 전통 순례가 시작되는 지점입니다. 기독교인은 이 부근에서 돌에 맞아 순교한 첫 순교자 스데반을 기려 이 문을 '성 스테반 문'이라 부릅니다(행 7). 문 바깥면에는 술탄 바이바르스의 문장인 표범 부조 네 마리가 새겨져 있는데, 흔히 사자로 여겨져 '사자 문'이라는 이름이 붙었습니다. 1967년 6일 전쟁 때 이스라엘 공수부대가 바로 이 문을 통해 구시가로 진입해 성전산과 통곡의 벽에 이르렀다는 현대사의 무게도 함께 지닌 곳입니다. 문을 지나면 곧바로 성 안나 교회와 베데스다 못 유적이 나오고, 여기서 서쪽으로 좁은 골목을 따라가며 십자가의 길 각 처를 순례하게 됩니다. 아침 이른 시간에 출발하면 인파를 피해 묵상하기 좋습니다.
Lions' Gate (St. Stephen's Gate) — Jerusalem
A gate in the Old City's eastern wall and the traditional starting point of the Via Dolorosa. Christians call it St. Stephen's Gate in memory of Stephen, the first martyr, stoned nearby (Acts 7). Its outer face bears four carved leopards, the emblem of Sultan Baybars, long mistaken for lions, giving the gate its common name. It also carries modern weight: in the 1967 Six-Day War, Israeli paratroopers entered the Old City through this very gate to reach the Temple Mount and Western Wall. Just inside lie the Church of St. Anne and the Pools of Bethesda, from which the Way of the Cross winds westward through the narrow lanes. An early start helps avoid the crowds.
