린디스판 수도원

잉글랜드 북동부 노섬벌랜드 해안의 홀리 아일랜드(성스러운 섬) 위에 자리한 린디스판 수도원은, 635년 스코틀랜드 아이오나섬에서 온 아일랜드 출신 수도사 에이단이 노섬브리아의 왕 오스왈드의 초청을 받아 세운 선교 수도원이다. 왕은 자신의 백성이 복음을 알기를 간절히 원해 아이오나에 선교사를 청했고, 이에 응답한 에이단은 이 섬을 근거지로 삼아 발로 걸어 다니며 북잉글랜드 전역에 복음을 전했다. 그의 뒤를 이은 성 커스버트는 온유한 목회와 기도로 켈트 선교의 꽃을 피웠고, 이 섬은 북방 복음화의 심장이 되었다. 700년경에는 이곳의 수도사 에드프리스가, 후대에 채색 필사본의 최고 걸작으로 꼽히는 '린디스판 복음서'를 정성 들여 필사하고 그림으로 장식한 것으로 전해진다. 그러나 793년, 유럽을 뒤흔든 바이킹의 첫 대규모 습격이 바로 이 성스러운 섬을 표적으로 삼았다. 수도사들은 학살과 약탈 속에서도 복음서와 성 커스버트의 유해를 지켜 안고 피난했고, 그 신앙의 불씨는 훗날 더럼으로 옮겨 가 이어졌다. 왕의 초청과 선교사의 응답이 한 지역 전체를 바꾼 이 이야기는, 함께 짐을 나누는 선교 협력의 아름다운 본보기다. 이 섬은 하루 두 차례 밀물에 둑길이 잠기는 조수 섬이므로, 반드시 물때표를 확인하고 물이 빠졌을 때 건너야 한다.
Lindisfarne Priory — Northumberland
On Holy Island off the coast of Northumberland in northeast England, Lindisfarne Priory was a mission monastery founded in 635 by Aidan, an Irish monk from Iona in Scotland, at the invitation of King Oswald of Northumbria. Longing for his people to know the gospel, the king had asked Iona for a missionary, and Aidan answered, making the island his base and traveling on foot to bring the gospel across northern England. His successor, St. Cuthbert, brought the Celtic mission to flower through gentle pastoral care and prayer, and the island became the heart of northern evangelization. Around 700 the monk Eadfrith is said to have lovingly copied and illuminated the Lindisfarne Gospels here, later regarded as the supreme masterpiece of insular art. But in 793 the first great Viking raid to shake Europe struck this very Holy Island; amid slaughter and plunder the monks carried the Gospels and Cuthbert's relics to safety, and that spark of faith lived on afterward at Durham. This story, of a king's invitation and a missionary's answer changing a whole region, is a beautiful model of shared missionary partnership. The island is a tidal island cut off twice daily; check the tide tables and cross the causeway only when the water has receded.
