이기풍선교기념관

이기풍선교기념관은 1908년 제주에 파송된 한국 장로교회 최초의 목사 중 한 사람, 이기풍 목사의 사역을 기념하는 전시관이다. 1865년 평양에서 태어난 그는 청년 시절 길에서 전도하던 마포삼열(새뮤얼 마펫) 선교사에게 돌을 던져 상처를 입힐 만큼 기독교를 배척하던 사람이었다. 그러나 극적으로 회심한 뒤 1907년 평양신학교 제1회 졸업생 일곱 목사 중 한 명이 되었고, 독노회가 조직되던 그해 스스로 험한 바다 건너 제주 선교사로 자원하여 이듬해 부임했다. 복음을 받은 지 한 세대 만에 자신의 선교사를 파송한 한국 교회의 놀라운 성장을 보여주는 현장으로, '받는 교회에서 주는 교회로'의 전환을 상징한다. 그는 제주 사역 이후에도 전남 일대에서 목회를 이어갔으며, 말년에는 신사참배를 거부하다 고초를 겪은 뒤 1942년 세상을 떠난 것으로 전해져 순교자적 삶의 마침표까지 보여준다. 전시는 제주 기독교 100여 년의 역사를 함께 다루어 섬 선교의 어려움과 열매를 입체적으로 소개한다. 돌을 던지던 핍박자가 복음을 들고 바다를 건너는 전도자가 된 이야기는 사울이 바울 되는 회심의 능력을 그대로 증언한다. 전시물 앞에서 하나님이 어떤 사람을 들어 쓰시는지 천천히 묵상해 보자.
Lee Ki-poong Mission Memorial Hall — Jeju Jeju
This memorial hall honors Rev. Lee Ki-poong, one of the first seven Korean Presbyterian ministers ordained in 1907, who sailed to Jeju in 1908 as the Korean church's first home missionary. As a young man in Pyongyang he had been so hostile to Christianity that he threw stones at missionary Samuel Moffett, but after a dramatic conversion he graduated in the first class of Pyongyang Theological Seminary and volunteered for the hard mission field across the sea. He later ministered in the southern provinces and is said to have died in 1942 after suffering for his refusal to bow at Shinto shrines, sealing his life with a martyr-like faithfulness. The exhibits trace a century of Christianity on Jeju and the remarkable speed with which the young Korean church—evangelized barely a generation earlier—began sending out its own missionaries, a true Saul-to-Paul story.
