라오디게아는 요한계시록의 일곱 교회 중 마지막 교회가 있던 도시로, '네가 차지도 아니하고 뜨겁지도 아니하도다'(계 3:15-16)라는 책망을 받은 곳이다. 리쿠스 계곡의 교통 요지에 자리한 이 도시는 금융업과 검은 양모 직물, 안약으로 유명한 의학교로 부유했는데, 주후 60년경 대지진으로 무너졌을 때 로마의 원조를 사양하고 자력으로 재건했다고 타키투스가 기록할 정도였다. '나는 부자라 부요하여 부족한 것이 없다'는 교회를 향해 주님이 불로 연단한 금과 흰 옷과 안약을 사라고 권면하신 것(계 3:17-18)은, 이 도시의 자랑거리를 그대로 빗댄 말씀이었다. 인근 히에라볼리의 온천수와 골로새의 차가운 물과 달리 라오디게아는 수도교로 물을 끌어와야 했고 그 물이 도착할 때쯤 미지근해졌다는 지리적 배경도 발굴로 확인되어, '미지근하여 토하여 버리리라'는 말씀의 생생한 문맥을 보여 준다. 2003년부터 파묵칼레 대학이 주도해 온 대규모 발굴로 열주 대로와 두 개의 극장, 아고라, 그리고 4세기의 대형 교회당 유구가 드러나 소아시아 초기 기독교 연구의 중요한 현장이 되었다. 이 교회는 골로새서 4장 16절에 골로새 교회와 편지를 바꿔 읽으라고 언급된 교회이기도 하다. 유적 언덕에서는 계곡 건너 히에라볼리(파묵칼레)의 흰 석회붕이 한눈에 들어온다. 풍요 속에서 미지근해진 교회를 향해 '볼지어다 내가 문 밖에 서서 두드리노니'(계 3:20)라고 말씀하신 주님의 음성을, 오늘의 풍요 속에 사는 순례자가 자기 이야기로 듣게 되는 곳이다.

Laodicea was the last of Revelation's seven churches, rebuked as 'neither cold nor hot' (Rev 3:15-16)—language rooted in the city itself. Wealthy from banking, black wool, and a medical school famous for eye salve, Laodicea even declined Rome's aid after the earthquake of about AD 60, as Tacitus records, and Christ's counsel to buy refined gold, white garments, and salve echoes each civic boast. Unlike Hierapolis's hot springs and Colossae's cold streams, Laodicea's aqueduct-fed water arrived lukewarm, giving vivid force to the warning. Excavations led by Pamukkale University since 2003 have uncovered colonnaded streets, two theaters, and a large 4th-century church building; the congregation also appears in Colossians 4:16. From the ruins the white terraces of Hierapolis (Pamukkale) are visible across the valley—and the words 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock' (Rev 3:20) come home to every pilgrim living amid modern abundance.
