라 세레나 대성당

La Serena Cathedral, a neoclassical church at the northeast corner of the city's Plaza de Armas, was designed by the French architect Juan Herbage and built between roughly 1844 and 1856. It replaced the colonial-era La Matriz parish church that had stood on the site since La Serena's founding in 1544, torn down as it grew too worn and small. Inside rest the remains of Francisco de Aguirre, the conquistador who founded the city at the mouth of the Coquimbo river, tying the cathedral to the origins of Chile's second-oldest city. La Serena grew into a key waypoint between Santiago and northern Peru in colonial times, and the cathedral was declared a national monument in 1981 as a living witness to that history. Its three naves, symmetrical bell towers, and restrained colonnaded facade exemplify neoclassical cathedral architecture in South America.
