쿠르시 (거라사 지방)

갈릴리 호수 동안의 쿠르시는 예수가 군대 귀신 들린 사람을 고치신 사건의 전승지로 여겨진다(막 5:1-20; 마 8:28-34; 눅 8:26-39). 예수의 명령에 귀신이 돼지 떼에게 들어가고, 돼지들이 가파른 비탈로 내리달아 호수에 빠져 죽었다는 이 이야기가 벌어진 무대로 오래 전부터 지목되어 왔다. 복음서는 이 지역을 거라사·가다라·거라사인의 땅 등으로 조금씩 다르게 전하는데, 여러 지명이 겹치는 넓은 이방 지역을 가리키는 것으로 이해된다. 쿠르시에는 5세기 비잔틴 시대의 대규모 수도원과 바실리카가 세워졌고, 아름다운 모자이크 바닥이 남아 있다. 이 수도원은 614년 페르시아 침공으로 파괴되고 749년 대지진으로 무너졌으며, 1970년 도로 공사 중 우연히 다시 발견되었다. 사건의 정확한 장소를 확정하기는 어렵지만, 호숫가로 급하게 떨어지는 가파른 비탈이 복음서 묘사와 잘 들어맞아 유력한 후보로 꼽힌다. 방문할 때는 조용한 유적과 호수를 바라보며, 사슬로도 묶을 수 없던 사람이 온전한 정신으로 예수 곁에 앉게 된 회복의 은혜를 묵상하기를 권한다.
Kursi (Gergesa) — Galilee
On the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee, Kursi is the traditional site where Jesus healed the demon-possessed man (Mark 5:1-20; Matt 8:28-34; Luke 8:26-39). Here, by tradition, the demons entered a herd of pigs that rushed down a steep bank into the lake and drowned. The Gospels name the region variously — Gerasenes, Gadarenes — understood as a broad Gentile area with overlapping place-names. Kursi holds a large 5th-century Byzantine monastery and basilica with fine mosaic floors. Destroyed in the Persian invasion of 614 and toppled by the earthquake of 749, it was rediscovered by chance during road work in 1970. The exact spot cannot be fixed, yet the steep bank plunging to the shore fits the Gospel description well. Gazing at the quiet ruins and the lake, meditate on the grace that restored a man no chains could bind, now seated in his right mind beside Jesus.
