한국교회100주년기념관

한국교회100주년기념관은 1984년 한국 개신교 선교 100주년을 기념하여 서울 종로 연지동에 세워졌다. 1884년 의료선교사 알렌(H. N. Allen)의 입국과 1885년 부활절 언더우드·아펜젤러의 제물포 상륙으로 시작된 복음의 역사가, 꼭 한 세기 만에 어떤 열매를 맺었는지를 기념하고 되새기는 공간이다. 이곳에는 여러 교단의 연합기관들이 함께 입주해, 교파의 벽을 넘어 협력하는 한국교회 연합운동의 상징적 자리가 되었다. 한 세기 전 이름조차 낯설던 복음이, 오늘날 수많은 교회와 성도를 통해 이 땅에 뿌리내린 과정을 돌아보노라면, 한 알의 겨자씨가 큰 나무로 자란 비유가 떠오른다. 서로 다른 교단이 힘을 모아 세운 기념관이라는 점에서, 이곳에는 그리스도 안에서 하나 되기를 구하는 한국교회의 오랜 소망이 담겨 있다. 주변 연지동 일대는 초기 장로교 선교부와 여러 기독교 기관들이 모여 있던 선교의 요람이었으니, 기념관을 둘러본 뒤 그 옛 자취를 따라 천천히 걸어 보면 좋다.

The Korean Church Centennial Memorial Hall was built in 1984 in Yeonji-dong, Seoul, to mark one hundred years of Protestant mission in Korea. It commemorates the fruit born within a single century of a gospel history that began with the arrival of medical missionary H. N. Allen in 1884 and the Easter landing of Underwood and Appenzeller at Jemulpo in 1885. Home to interdenominational church organizations, it stands as a symbol of the Korean church's cooperative unity across denominational lines. To trace how a once-unfamiliar gospel took root through countless churches and believers is to recall the parable of the mustard seed grown into a great tree. Built by different denominations joining hands, it carries the church's long hope of being one in Christ. The surrounding neighborhood, once a cradle of early mission compounds, rewards a slow walk.
