백령 중화동교회
1896년 백령도에 세워진 서해 도서 최초의 장로교회로, 한국에서 두 번째로 오래된 장로교회로 꼽힌다. 서해 최북단의 이 외딴 섬에 교회가 세워진 배경에는, 1866년 대동강에서 순교한 토마스 선교사 이후 서해 뱃길을 따라 이어져 온 복음 전래의 역사가 놓여 있다. 관직에서 물러나 섬에 살던 허득의 주선과 유배 온 선비들을 통해 복음이 전해졌고, 주민들은 선교사가 상주하지 않는 섬에서 스스로 예배 공동체를 세웠다. 육지보다 먼저 섬에 뿌리내린 복음의 역사는, 하나님의 일하심이 사람의 지도를 따라가지 않음을 보여 준다. 이후 언더우드 선교사 계열의 목회자들이 뱃길로 오가며 세례를 베풀고 교회를 든든히 세웠다고 전해진다. 주민들이 스스로 세운 교회가 한 세기 넘게 섬 공동체의 중심이 되어, 분단 이후 최전방이 된 섬에서도 예배는 끊이지 않았다. 교회 옆에 세워진 백령기독교역사관은 토마스 선교사와 서해 선교, 중화동교회의 역사를 자료로 보여 준다. 역사관을 먼저 둘러본 뒤 언덕 위 예배당에 올라 바다를 내려다보면, 복음이 건너온 그 뱃길이 한눈에 들어온다.
Junghwadong Church, Baengnyeong Island — Incheon Ongjin-gun
Founded in 1896 on Baengnyeong Island, Junghwadong Church is the first Presbyterian church of Korea's western islands and counted among the nation's two oldest Presbyterian congregations. It stands in the stream of gospel history that followed missionary Robert Thomas's martyrdom on the Taedong River in 1866, carried along the western sea routes; the islanders, guided by the retired official Heo Deuk and exiled scholars, formed a worshiping community on their own, before any missionary lived among them. For over a century the church has been the heart of the island community — worship unbroken even after division made this a frontline island. Visit the adjacent Christian history museum on Thomas and the western-sea missions, then look out over the water from the hilltop chapel and trace the route the gospel once sailed.
