존 녹스 하우스

에든버러 로열마일에 서 있는 15세기 중반의 저택으로, 로열마일에 남은 가장 오래된 중세 주택 중 하나다. 스코틀랜드 종교개혁자 존 녹스가 말년에 거주하다 1572년 11월 24일 세상을 떠난 곳으로 전해져 그의 이름이 붙었다. 흥미롭게도 실제 소유주는 스코틀랜드 여왕 메리의 금세공사였던 제임스 모스만으로, 그는 여왕파 편에 서서 에든버러성 농성에 가담했다가 1573년 처형당했다. 개혁자와 여왕파 금세공사의 이름이 한 집에 얽힌 사연 자체가, 신앙과 정치가 목숨을 걸고 부딪히던 16세기 스코틀랜드의 격동을 압축해 보여 준다. 19세기에 철거될 뻔했던 이 집은 녹스와의 인연 덕분에 보존되어, 지금은 녹스의 생애와 스코틀랜드 종교개혁을 전시하는 박물관으로 운영된다. 목조 외랑과 채색 천장이 잘 남아 있고, 외벽에는 '하나님을 무엇보다 사랑하고 네 이웃을 네 몸과 같이 사랑하라'는 옛 명문이 새겨져 있다. '스코틀랜드를 주소서, 아니면 죽음을 주소서'라고 기도했다고 전해지는 개혁자의 뜨거운 심장을, 그가 마지막 숨을 거두었다고 전해지는 방에서 만나게 된다.
John Knox House — City of Edinburgh
This mid-fifteenth-century house on the Royal Mile, one of the oldest surviving medieval dwellings on the street, is where the Scottish Reformer John Knox is said to have spent his final months before dying on 24 November 1572. Its actual owner was James Mossman, goldsmith to Mary Queen of Scots, who sided with the queen's party and was executed in 1573 after the siege of Edinburgh Castle — a twist that captures the turbulence of an age when faith and politics collided at the cost of lives. Nearly demolished in the nineteenth century, the house was saved by its association with Knox and now serves as a museum of his life and the Scottish Reformation. Its timber gallery and painted ceiling survive, and the facade bears the old inscription 'Love God above all and your neighbour as yourself' — a fitting motto for the reformer said to have prayed, 'Give me Scotland, or I die.'
