존 번연 박물관(베드퍼드)

존 번연 박물관은 불후의 신앙 고전 '천로역정'을 쓴 존 번연(1628-1688)이 목회한 영국 베드퍼드의 번연 미팅 교회에 병설된 기념 박물관이다. 정규 교육을 거의 받지 못한 땜장이 출신의 번연은 회심 후 열정적인 설교자가 되었으나, 국교회의 허가 없이 설교했다는 이유로 붙잡혀 무려 12년 동안 베드퍼드 감옥에 갇혔다. 신앙의 자유가 없던 그 시대, 그는 설교를 그만두겠다고 약속만 하면 풀려날 수 있었지만 양심을 굽히지 않고 옥살이를 택했으며, 바로 그 감옥에서 구상하고 써 내려간 '천로역정'(1678)은 성경 다음으로 널리 읽힌 신앙 서적이 되어 수백 개 언어로 번역되었다. 멸망의 도성을 떠나 십자가에서 짐을 벗고 갖은 시련을 통과해 하늘 도성에 이르는 주인공 크리스천의 여정은, 오늘도 믿는 이들에게 순례하는 삶의 지도를 펼쳐 보인다. 박물관은 번연의 유품과 여러 언어로 번역된 판본들, 그리고 그의 생애를 담은 자료들을 전시해, 감옥에서도 꺾이지 않은 설교자의 양심과 평신도의 붓끝에서 태어난 복음 문학의 힘을 만나게 한다. 이곳은 종교개혁의 정신을 이어받은 개신교 순례자에게 특별히 뜻깊은 자리다. 교회 입구의 청동문에 새겨진 천로역정의 장면들과 번연의 유품을 눈여겨보며, 순례하는 그리스도인의 걸음을 다시 다짐해 보자.

Attached to Bunyan Meeting Church in Bedford, England, this museum honors John Bunyan (1628-1688), the author of the enduring classic The Pilgrim's Progress. A tinker with almost no formal schooling, Bunyan became a fervent preacher after his conversion but was jailed for twelve years in Bedford for preaching without the state church's license. In an age with no religious freedom, he could have gone free simply by promising to stop preaching, yet he kept his conscience and chose prison — and there he conceived and wrote The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), which became, after the Bible, one of the most widely read books in Christian history, translated into hundreds of languages. The journey of Christian, leaving the City of Destruction, losing his burden at the cross, and passing through trials to the Celestial City, still maps the pilgrim life for believers today. The museum displays Bunyan's effects, translated editions, and materials on his life; look especially for the bronze doors at the church depicting scenes from the allegory.
